Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Blood

The executive suite on the sixty-fourth floor of the Vieri Tower was quiet, insulated from the storm by triple-paned acoustic glass. Sebastian Vieri sat behind a desk crafted from imported Italian marble, swirling two fingers of scotch in a crystal tumbler. Opposite him sat Thomas Caruso, looking decades older than his fifty-four years, his hands folded tensely in his lap.

""You guaranteed me she wouldn't leave the brownstone before we secured the drives, Thomas,"" Sebastian said, his tone deceptively mild. ""Now Dino is in custody, Gabriel has closed the FDR, and Natalie Russo is inside a hospital surrounded by fifty private security guards.""

""Gabriel won't let her testify,"" Thomas insisted, though his voice lacked conviction. ""He can't. If she goes to the Southern District of New York with those ledgers, Russo Holdings dissolves. The asset forfeiture alone will bankrupt the estate. Gabriel spent his entire adult life building this. He won't burn his own kingdom to protect a wife who walked out on him.""

The heavy double doors of the boardroom burst open with a splintering crash.

Sebastian’s two personal bodyguards reached for their holsters, but they were too late. Leo Vance and three Russo operatives swept into the room, their suppressed rifles raised and trained with surgical precision on the security detail's chests.

""Hands on the table,"" Leo commanded. ""Move an inch and we paint the windows.""

The bodyguards froze, then slowly raised their palms.

Gabriel walked in behind them.

He hadn't changed clothes. His charcoal suit was soaked, dark with road grime and dried blood. His jaw was bruised, his knuckles raw, and his eyes carried an emptiness that made Sebastian Vieri set his scotch down without taking a sip.

""Gabriel,"" Sebastian said, forcing a calm smile that didn't reach his eyes. ""You look terrible. You shouldn't be driving in this weather.""

Gabriel ignored him. He walked straight to the chair where Thomas Caruso sat.

Thomas looked up, his silver hair unkempt, his face pale. ""Gabriel... you have to understand. I did this for your father’s memory. The Russo family was supposed to be untouchable. Kingsbridge was the culmination of forty years of work.""

Gabriel leaned down until his face was inches from the man who had mentored him since boyhood. ""My father died on a sidewalk because he trusted men like you,"" Gabriel whispered. ""Men who thought loyalty had an expiration date and an exchange rate.""

Gabriel reached inside his breast pocket. He pulled out a sleek, titanium-cased external hard drive—the master backup Natalie had left in the penthouse safe—and placed it gently on the center of Sebastian’s marble desk.

Sebastian frowned, glancing down at it. ""What is this?""

""That is every shell company,"" Gabriel said, his voice flat and deadly. ""Every offshore account in Belize and Cyprus. Every forged contractor signature, every bribe paid to the city council, and every dollar Sebastian Vieri skimmed from the Kingsbridge municipal bond fund over the last six years.""

Sebastian’s smile vanished completely. ""If you hand that over, Gabriel, you go down with me. You signed the joint development framework two hours ago. You're the majority general partner.""

""I know,"" Gabriel said.

Thomas stood up, his voice cracking with genuine horror. ""Gabriel, no! You'll face fifteen years in a federal penitentiary! Everything we built—the towers, the shipping lines, the political seats—they'll tear it all apart!""

Gabriel turned to Thomas. The look in Gabriel’s eyes wasn't anger; it was an absolute, terrifying liberation.

""Let them tear it down,"" Gabriel said. ""I built it once. I can build it again. But tonight, I am burning every single piece of it that threatens my family.""

He looked back at Sebastian. ""I already transmitted the unencrypted master files to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District. Special agents are entering the lobby downstairs right now, Sebastian. You have approximately four minutes to decide which high-priced lawyer is going to fail to keep you out of ADX Florence.""

Sebastian’s composure shattered. He lunged across the desk, his face contorted in rage. ""You ruined us for a woman? For an accountant?!""

Gabriel didn't strike him. He simply grabbed Sebastian by the lapels of his thousand-dollar suit, dragged him across the marble surface until their foreheads almost touched, and spoke with ice in his throat.

May you like

""Her name is Natalie,"" Gabriel whispered. ""And she was the only real thing in this entire city.""

He threw Sebastian back into his chair, turned on his heel, and walked out of the tower into the descending sirens of federal law enforcement.
