Chapter 1 - The Paperwork of Treason

The brownstone kitchen smelled of lavender tea and raw panic. Outside, rain lashed the bay windows overlooking East 74th Street, blurring the streetlamps into smeared halos of amber. Rachel Sloan slid the matte-black flash drive toward the center of the oak table, her manicured fingertip leaving a faint streak of condensation on the polished wood.

""If anything happens to me, release everything,"" Natalie said again. Her voice was remarkably steady for a woman whose entire world had shattered fifty-two minutes ago. She kept one hand splayed across the swell of her twenty-eight-week belly. Underneath her palm, the baby shifted—a sharp, fluttering kick that reminded Natalie of the ultrasound printout currently sitting in Gabriel’s cold, marble penthouse.

Rachel pulled her reading glasses down her nose. ""Do you know what's on this, Nat? Truly?""

""Two sets of books,"" Natalie whispered, tucking a strand of dark hair behind her ear. ""The Kingsbridge redevelopment project isn't just an urban revitalization contract. It’s a laundering conduit. Sebastian Vieri didn't sign that deal tonight because Gabriel outsmarted him. Sebastian signed it because he built a pipeline straight through Russo Holdings to scrub forty million dollars in illegal union kickbacks. And Gabriel's name is on every single bond issue.""

Rachel leaned back, the leather of her armchair groaning. ""And Gabriel didn't know?""

""He didn't want to know,"" Natalie said, the raw pain cutting through her forensic composure. ""There is a difference. Gabriel looks at power like oxygen. He spent eleven years running from the night his father bled out on a sidewalk in Little Italy. He convinced himself that if he owned the sky over New York, nobody could ever reach up and hurt him. But to get the sky, he let monsters lay the foundation.""

""And Thomas Caruso?"" Rachel asked, gesturing to the encrypted ledger open on her laptop screen.

""Thomas has been whispering in Gabriel's ear since Gabriel was twenty-one,"" Natalie said. She picked up her tea, but her fingers trembled, so she set it back down. ""Thomas knew that if I finished my audit, the Department of Justice would freeze the escrow accounts before midnight. So Thomas didn't go to Gabriel. He went to Sebastian. He traded my safety to keep Gabriel's empire intact.""

A heavy knock rattled the front door downstairs.

Natalie flinched. Her pulse spiked into her throat. ""Did you tell anyone I was coming here?""

""No,"" Rachel said, instantly standing up. ""Nobody.""

Downstairs, the heavy iron knocker struck three slow, deliberate times. It wasn't the frantic hammering of a desperate husband. It was the rhythmic, measured cadence of corporate enforcers.

Rachel crept toward the front hallway, motioning for Natalie to stay out of sight behind the kitchen partition. Through the frosted side-glass of the heavy parlor door, two silhouettes stood beneath umbrellas in the downpour.

""Ms. Sloan?"" a flat, modulated voice called through the wood. ""We have a package from Russo Holdings. Legal documents requiring Mrs. Russo's signature regarding the emergency board recess.""

""He didn't send them,"" Natalie whispered, stepping softly behind Rachel. She recognized the cold cadence. ""That's not Gabriel's private security. Gabriel uses former Marine details who announce their names and show their pins. That voice belongs to Frank Barone. He's Sebastian Vieri's head of logistics.""

Rachel reached for her phone to dial 911, but the display flickered, searched for service, and flashed No Signal.

""Cell jammer,"" Natalie breathed, the color draining from her cheeks. Her fingers instinctively gripped her belly. ""Sebastian knows Gabriel removed Thomas. He knows the shield is down. He’s not waiting for Gabriel to decide whether to protect me or the deal. He’s taking the leverage right now.""

""The service stairs through the cellar,"" Rachel whispered urgently, locking the deadbolt and sliding the brass safety chain into place. ""It leads out to the alley connecting to Lexington. We move now, Natalie.""

Behind them, a sharp metallic click echoed from the lock. The men outside weren't waiting for an invitation. They had a bypass key, supplied by someone who knew every asset and address associated with the Russo family. Thomas Caruso's fingerprints were all over this night, and the rain was washing away any hope of a peaceful surrender.
