Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

Gabriel’s expression instantly hardened into stone, the gentle warmth vanishing like mist before the sun. ""Did he come alone?""
""No,"" Luca replied, glancing at a security feed on his phone. ""He brought two junior associates from his legal counsel and three freelance paparazzi. He’s trying to stage a public spectacle on the ground floor to force a settlement before the markets open.""
Gabriel turned to Noel, his voice level and dark. ""Stay up here. I’ll have Luca handle it.""
""No,"" Noel said firmly, setting her coffee cup down on the marble counter. She squared her shoulders, her chin lifting with the same unyielding strength that had kept her alive through two years of poverty and ridicule. ""I spent two years running away from his lies, Gabriel. I hid in kitchens, took the service stairs, and stayed silent while he dragged my name through the mud. If David Pierce wants to talk about debts, he's going to look me in the eye when I answer.""
Gabriel watched her for a long moment, a flicker of genuine admiration blazing in his dark eyes. A slow, lethal smile curved his lips. ""As you wish, my queen. Let's go educate Mr. Pierce on the law.""
Five minutes later, the private high-speed elevator opened directly into the polished, cavernous lobby of the Rossi Tower.
The scene was pure chaos. David Pierce stood in the center of the marble floor, his hair disheveled, his designer tie loosened, and dark purple circles bruising the skin under his eyes. He had clearly not slept a wink. He was waving a stack of legal papers in the face of the head of building security while two nervous young lawyers stood behind him, clutching leather briefcases. Outside the revolving glass doors, flashes from camera lenses flickered against the tinted glass as paparazzi tried to capture the spectacle.
""I have a binding post-nuptial arbitration agreement!"" David roared hysterically, his voice cracking. ""Noel Vance signed away her rights to the foundation's assets and assumed responsibility for our outstanding liabilities! If she doesn't meet with me right now to drop this illegal corporate siege, I will file for immediate liquidation and drag her through the state supreme court!""
""You won't be dragging anyone anywhere, David,"" Noel's clear, resonant voice echoed across the expansive marble lobby.
David froze. He spun around, his bloodshot eyes locking onto Noel as she walked out of the private elevator bank. She was wearing a tailored navy blazer and trousers Gabriel’s staff had prepared for her, her posture commanding, regal, and completely unrecognizable from the timid woman he had bullied by the hotel kitchen the night before.
Walking half a step behind her was Gabriel Rossi, flanked by four imposing security guards whose hands rested casually beneath their tailored jackets. The entire lobby fell dead silent. Even the paparazzi outside stopped snapping photos, intimidated by the sheer presence of the underworld kingpin.
David swallowed hard, but desperation had made him reckless. He took a stumbling step toward Noel, holding up the papers like a shield. ""Noel! Thank God. Look, you have to call off this lunatic! Rossi froze our liquid accounts! He bought out our bridge loans and called them due within twenty-four hours! He’s destroying the Vanguard! Everything we built together!""
""Everything I built, David,"" Noel corrected coldly, stopping six feet away. ""You didn't care about 'what we built together' when you forged my signature on the severance agreement while I was in the hospital recovering from pneumonia. You didn't care when you told every donor in this city that I had lost my mind and stolen operational funds.""
David’s face twitched with guilt and fury. ""That was business, Noel! You were weak! You couldn't handle the scale of what we were becoming! But look at these contracts!"" He thrust the papers toward her. ""You signed a personal guarantee on the original property lease! If the Vanguard goes bankrupt today, you owe five hundred thousand dollars! I will ruin you completely! Unless... unless you tell Rossi to back off and release our accounts.""
Gabriel stepped forward, placing a heavy hand on Noel’s shoulder. His gaze fell upon David's trembling hands.
""David,"" Gabriel spoke, his voice dripping with venomous amusement. ""Did you really think I bought your outstanding debt blindly? Did you honestly believe a man in my position doesn't conduct thorough forensic analysis before signing a check?""
Gabriel gestured slightly with his left hand. Luca stepped forward and pulled a heavy black binder from under his arm, flipping it open to a series of high-resolution digital scans.
""This is the forensic handwriting analysis completed three hours ago by the former chief of document verification for the Federal Bureau of Investigation,"" Gabriel said smoothly. ""It proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Noel Vance’s signature on your restructuring agreement was traced from an old corporate tax return. It is a class-B felony, David. Forgery, wire fraud, and grand larceny.""
David's knees buckled slightly. The two junior lawyers behind him exchanged horrified glances, immediately took three steps backward, and quietly exited through the side doors, abandoning their client to the wolves.

""You're bluffing,"" David whispered, his voice trembling violently. ""You're just trying to scare me...""
""I don't scare people, David,"" Gabriel replied, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that seemed to swallow the room whole. ""I destroy them. And right now, the state attorney general is reviewing those exact documents in his office. You have approximately two hours before an arrest warrant is issued for your name.""
