Chapter 9 - The Daughter's Choice

When I returned home to our estate in Santa Teresa that evening, the house was quiet. The toxic presence of Ricardo’s lies had been completely purged. For the first time in seventeen years, the air felt clean, light, and full of possibility.
My sixteen-year-old daughter, Sofía, was sitting on the back terrace, watching the sunset over the valley. Beside her sat our golden retriever, resting his head on her lap. Sofía had always been mature beyond her years, possessing her grandfather's sharp intuition and quiet strength.
I walked out and sat beside her, wrapping a warm cardigan around her shoulders. "How are you doing, sweetheart?"
Sofía leaned her head against my shoulder. She had known about her father's arrest, and she had seen the news stories covering the scandal.
"He tried to call me this afternoon from a prepaid phone," Sofía said softly. "He told me you had destroyed our family. He said you were heartless and that you threw him into the street."
A knot formed in my throat. "And what did you say to him?"
Sofía turned to look at me, her brown eyes steady and bright with pride. "I told him that you didn't destroy our family—he did, the day he brought another woman into our lives and used grandma to deceive you. I told him that for years I watched you work twelve hours a day while he played golf and took the credit. And then I hung up."
Tears pricked my eyes, but they were tears of profound relief. I wrapped my arms around my daughter and held her tight against my chest.

"You don't have to carry any of this, Sofía," I whispered, kissing her hair. "You just need to focus on your school, your dreams, and your art."
"I'm not worried, Mom," Sofía smiled, wiping a stray tear from my cheek. "Because for the first time in my life, I see my mother standing up for herself. You're not his shadow anymore. You're the one in charge."
