Chapter 4 - The Midnight Birth

Upstairs in the maternity suite, Ricardo was pacing the floor, completely oblivious to the storm gathering around his neck. It was past midnight, and Daniela had finally been taken into the delivery suite after an uncomplicated labor.

Ricardo sat in the private waiting lounge, pouring himself a glass of sparkling water. In his briefcase lay the forged loan documents, bearing what he believed was an ironclad lien against my family's logistics center. In his mind, he had executed the perfect corporate heist: he would welcome his new son, announce his irreconcilable differences with Mariana by Friday, and claim that the sudden insolvency of Mendoza Freight was due to market downturns. He had already purchased two first-class one-way tickets to Miami for next month.

The delivery room doors opened, and a pediatrician walked out, smiling. "Congratulations, Mr. Mendoza. A healthy baby boy. Eight pounds, two ounces. Mother and child are both resting comfortably."

Ricardo exhaled a long, triumphant breath. He felt invincible. He stepped into the recovery room, gazing down at the newborn wrapped in a soft blue blanket. Daniela looked up at him, exhausted but radiant.

"Did you call the escrow agent?" Daniela whispered, her fingers brushing his sleeve. "Is the house in the hills finalized?"

"First thing in the morning," Ricardo promised, kissing her temple. "The notary verified the collateral papers yesterday. Mariana is downstairs sleeping like a log beside my mother. By the time she realizes the locks on the estate have been changed, our trust will hold all the liquid cash."

At that exact moment, Ricardo’s phone buzzed violently in his jacket pocket. He frowned, checking the caller ID. It was Julian, our chief operating officer and Ricardo’s closest college fraternity brother.

"Julian, it’s past midnight," Ricardo whispered, stepping into the corridor. "I told you not to call unless the loading docks were on fire."

"Ricardo, where are you?" Julian’s voice was laced with pure panic. "The federal marshals just showed up at the central logistics terminal with a court order. Every outbound transport has been halted. The banking portal has completely locked us out!"

Ricardo scoffed, leaning against the hallway wall. "What are you babbling about? That’s impossible. I have primary administrative authorization."

"Not anymore, you don't!" Julian shouted. "Mariana just revoked your power of attorney and filed an emergency injunction for corporate embezzlement! And Ricardo... the police are reviewing security footage from yesterday. They're looking for you regarding forged commercial instruments!"
