Chapter 10 - Dawn of a New Empire

One year later.

The morning sun reflected off the sleek glass exterior of Salgado Logistics Tower—the newly renamed corporate headquarters in the financial district. Under my sole leadership as CEO, the company had experienced its most profitable four quarters in history. We had expanded into sustainable cold-chain shipping, secured three major international freight contracts, and doubled our workforce.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the corner office on the top floor, sipping an espresso. On my desk lay the morning business journal featuring an article titled: Mariana Salgado: The Woman Who Rebuilt a Broken Dynasty into a Billion-Dollar Juggernaut.

My assistant knocked gently on the door. "Mrs. Salgado, the quarterly charity committee is here to see you. And there's a mail delivery from the county court."

I opened the court envelope. It was the final restitution statement regarding Ricardo. Stripped of his executive credentials and blacklisted across the shipping industry, he was now working twelve-hour shifts as a junior dispatcher at an independent trucking depot three states away, living in a cramped studio apartment with half his wages garnished automatically every month. Daniela had long since left him, taking their child to live with her sister after realizing Ricardo would never be a millionaire again. Elvira spent her days complaining to neighbors who didn't care to listen, unable to afford the salon visits or high-society brunches that had once defined her hollow existence.

I felt no malice looking at the papers. I felt no urge to celebrate their misery. They had simply received the harvest of the seeds they had planted with their own selfish hands.

The door opened wider, and Mateo walked in, accompanied by Sofía, who was holding her acceptance letter to the prestigious architecture program at Stanford University.

"Look, Mom!" Sofía cheered, holding the envelope high in the air. "I got in! Full scholarship for academic excellence!"

I caught my daughter in an embrace, laughing with genuine, unfiltered joy. Mateo smiled warmly from the doorway, raising a celebratory coffee cup in our direction.

Seventeen years of silence, sacrifice, and deceit had tried to bury me. But like my father always said, a foundation built on truth and unyielding dignity can never be shaken by cowards.

I looked out across the sprawling city below, the horizon endless, bright, and completely mine. The nightmare was over. My empire had finally begun.
