Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Ambush

At 9:45 the following morning, the executive boardroom on the sixty-fifth floor of the Vale Tower was a powder keg waiting for a match.
The room was a cathedral of corporate greed—polished teak tables, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the misty skyline of downtown Chicago, and sixteen high-ranking shareholders and board members seated in leather executive chairs. At the head of the table sat Vincent Vale, a silver-haired, impeccably groomed man in his early sixties whose arrogant smile practically radiated victory. Beside him sat Victoria Sterling and her father, Richard, whispering quietly with smug confidence.
“It is nearly ten o'clock,” Vincent announced, checking his diamond-encrusted Rolex. “As per company bylaws, if the Chief Executive Officer fails to appear for an emergency session within fifteen minutes of the gavel, his voting proxy temporarily reverts to the senior board member. Clearly, my nephew Dominic has lost control of his faculties, fleeing the city after yesterday's disgraceful shootout on Lake Shore Drive.”
“Hear, hear,” Richard Sterling agreed, leaning forward. “Dominic’s reckless personal life is tanking our stock prices. Associating with low-class waitresses, attracting mob violence to public healthcare centers—it’s an embarrassment to our investors. We must vote immediately to strip him of executive authority.”
The board members murmured in anxious agreement, preparing to raise their hands.
Vincent raised a polished wooden gavel, grinning like a wolf about to feast. “Seeing as the chair is vacant, I move to—”
The heavy double oak doors of the boardroom were kicked off their latch with the force of an artillery shell.
Every head in the room snapped toward the entrance.
Dominic Vale strode into the room. He was dressed in an immaculate, three-piece charcoal suit, his tailored shoulders broad, his face carved of absolute vengeance. But what made the entire room gasp in sheer disbelief was not Dominic.
It was the woman beside him.
Claire walked into the room with her head held high, looking every inch a queen. She wore a tailored black sheath dress provided by Dominic’s stylists, her posture flawless, her gaze sharp, piercing, and completely unbothered by the sea of hostile millionaires staring at her. Her hand was firmly intertwined with Dominic’s.
Behind them walked Marcus and a team of four federal agents carrying thick, black binders of evidence.
Vincent’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a gray pallor of dread. Victoria gasped, instinctively leaning back in her chair.
“Good morning, Uncle,” Dominic’s voice boomed across the boardroom, carrying an icy authority that silenced even the breathing of the shareholders. “I apologize for the delay. The federal prosecutors required my signature on several asset-forfeiture warrants before I could make the drive.”
“What is the meaning of this?” Vincent blustered, slamming his gavel onto the table to feign control. “Dominic, you cannot bring unauthorized civilians and federal agents into an executive board session! This is a gross violation of corporate protocol!”
“The only violation happening here is high treason, fraud, and attempted murder,” Claire announced, stepping forward with unwavering confidence.
Victoria sneered, trying desperately to regain her footing. “Listen to you! A little River North waitress playing dress-up! You have no standing here, Claire. Guards! Remove this woman!”
None of the security guards moved. They stood like statues at the door, their loyalty having long been secured by Dominic.
“Miss Bennett has every standing in this room,” Dominic stated coldly, walking directly to the head of the table and looming over Vincent until his uncle shrank visibly back into his leather chair. Dominic dropped a heavy legal document directly onto Vincent’s pristine desk blotter. “As of eight o'clock this morning, I transferred forty-nine percent of my personal voting shares into an irrevocable family trust in Claire Bennett’s name. She owns more of this company than you and the Sterlings combined, Vincent.”
The room erupted into shocked whispers. Richard Sterling stood up furiously. “This is madness! You gave half your empire to a stranger?”
“She is not a stranger,” Dominic declared, turning his eyes to Claire with a warmth that completely contrasted the lethal fury directed at his uncle. “She is my future wife. And the mother of the future heir of the Vale legacy.”
Claire held Dominic’s gaze, her heart soaring despite the high-stakes battlefield surrounding them. In front of the most powerful people in the state, Dominic had claimed her, without hesitation, without shame, and with total devotion.
“You can’t do this!” Vincent screamed, panic finally cracking through his polished veneer. “The morality clause! The shootout yesterday proves you are unfit to lead!”
“Let’s talk about yesterday’s shootout,” Dominic said softly. He gestured to the lead federal agent, who stepped forward and opened a large digital folder on the boardroom's central projection screen.
Audio recordings began playing through the high-definition speakers. It was Vincent’s voice, crisp and unmistakable: “Make sure the girl doesn't leave that clinic alive. If she dies, Dominic will break. Then we take the vote.”
Next came bank records, showing wire transfers of two million dollars from an offshore account controlled by Richard Sterling to an assassin cell in Detroit. And finally, security footage from the penthouse freight elevator, showing Thomas, the kitchen assistant, receiving a vial of cyanide directly from Victoria Sterling in an alleyway behind the Gold Coast high-rise.
Victoria covered her mouth, letting out a strangled sob. Richard Sterling collapsed back into his seat, clutching his chest.
Vincent looked around the room, wild-eyed, searching for allies among the board members. But every single shareholder was already looking away, utterly horrified by the sheer brutality and stupidity of the evidence laid bare.
“Vincent Vale, Richard Sterling, Victoria Sterling,” the federal agent announced, pulling out three sets of stainless steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, racketeering, and corporate espionage. Step away from the table with your hands visible.”
As the agents moved in, Vincent lunged forward, grabbing a heavy brass paperweight from the desk, his eyes crazed with desperation. “I built this company with your father, Dominic! You won't take it from me for a whore!”
Before Vincent could even raise his arm, Dominic moved with terrifying speed. His hand shot out, catching Vincent by the throat with iron force, slamming him backward against the glass window overlooking the dizzying drop to the street below.
“Say her name again,” Dominic whispered, his face inches from Vincent’s, his fingers squeezing just enough to cut off the older man’s breath. “Give me one reason not to throw you through this glass right now.”
“Dominic!” Claire’s voice cut through the violence like a bell. She placed a gentle, steady hand on his arm. “Don't. He isn't worth your freedom. Our baby needs a father, not a martyr.”
Dominic paused. The feral beast inside him slowly receded, tamed entirely by the touch of her hand. He released his grip, allowing Vincent to slide pathetically to the floor, coughing and gasping for air as the federal agents slapped the cuffs onto his wrists.

Dominic adjusted his cuffs, turned his back on his disgraced uncle, and faced the stunned board members.
“The meeting is adjourned,” Dominic announced calmly. “And for the record… Claire is firing the entire legal department by noon.”
