Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

The private elevator opened directly into the marble foyer of Dominic’s sprawling two-story penthouse atop the Gold Coast high-rise. Claire remembered this place from the single, breathtaking weekend they had spent together before the world imploded. Then, it had felt like an enchanted castle in the clouds, surrounded by panoramic glass walls showcasing the glittering Chicago skyline. Now, with the heavy automated steel security shutters rolling down to seal every window in response to the security breach, it felt like a palatial subterranean bunker.
Within twenty minutes of their arrival, a private physician had already arrived through a private service entrance. Dr. Henderson, an older gentleman whose discreet demeanor suggested he had stitched up gunshot wounds for high-ranking criminals for decades, patched Dominic’s shoulder without asking a single question.
Claire sat on a velvet sofa across the expansive living room, clutching a mug of herbal tea that Dominic’s housekeeper had quietly placed before her. Her mind spun in endless, dizzying circles. She watched Dominic as Dr. Henderson finished bandaging his wound. Even injured, stripped to his waist with white gauze contrasting sharply against his bronzed skin and tattooed ribs, Dominic looked regal, intimidating, and dangerously capable.
“The bullet grazed the deltoid,” Dr. Henderson said, packing his surgical kit into a leather bag. “Three centimeters deeper and it would have shattered the bone. Keep it clean, take the antibiotics, and avoid heavy lifting for two weeks, Mr. Vale.”
“Thank you, Doctor. Marcus will escort you down,” Dominic said dismissal in his tone. As the doctor left, Dominic slipped into a soft cashmere sweater, wincing only slightly as his left arm entered the sleeve. He walked over to Claire, his eyes softening the moment they locked onto hers.
“You haven’t touched your tea,” he observed gently, sitting on the opposite end of the couch, maintaining a respectful distance that surprised her.
“You said it was someone in your family,” Claire said, ignoring the tea completely. She set the mug on the glass table with a sharp clink. “Who wants to kill us, Dominic? If I am going to be locked in a penthouse bunker while gunmen shoot up public clinics, I deserve to know the names of the monsters trying to end my life.”
Dominic sighed, running a hand through his disordered black hair. “My uncle, Vincent. When my father died four years ago, the board of our logistics and property development holdings was split. Vincent believed the leadership belonged to him by seniority. But my father named me sole executor. Vincent has been skimming millions through off-the-books shipping lanes for years. When Michael died…” Dominic’s voice caught, his throat tight, “Vincent thought I would spiral. He thought grief would make me weak enough to push aside.”
“And then you met me,” Claire whispered.
“And then I met you,” Dominic confirmed, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “You weren’t part of the syndicate. You were honest. You looked through the bullshit and the power and saw the man bleeding on the inside. Being with you made me want to get out, Claire. Truly get out. I’ve been systematically liquidating our illegal holdings, turning every dirty contract into clean, legitimate enterprise. Vincent found out. He realized that once the business is clean, his illicit profits disappear entirely.”
“So he targeted me to force you to stay in the mud?”
“He targeted you to break me,” Dominic said, his gaze intense, unwavering, and burning with a terrifying possessiveness. “He thought if he eliminated the one person who gave me a reason to change, I would become reckless. Or worse, that he could use your life to force me to hand over the controlling shares of the corporation. When his men reported you entered that clinic this morning, he realized you were pregnant before I did.”
Claire felt a cold shiver crawl down her spine. “How did you find out?”
“A nurse inside Lakeshore Women’s Center was on Vincent’s payroll,” Dominic admitted, shame coloring his voice. “She flagged your name in their intake system twenty minutes before your appointment. The moment my intelligence team intercepted the ping to Vincent’s cell phone, I broke every traffic law between River North and Lake Shore Drive to get to you.”
Claire buried her face in her hands. The horror of the morning was crashing down on her in relentless waves. She had thought she was walking into a routine, quiet medical appointment to make the most heart-wrenching decision of her life alone. Instead, she had walked directly into the center of a mob war, saved only by the man who had ghosted her to protect her.
“Claire,” Dominic’s voice was right next to her now. He had moved across the sofa, his warmth enveloping her. “Look at me.”
She dropped her hands, her eyes rimmed with red. “I was going to terminate it, Dominic,” she confessed, her voice shaking with raw, agonizing honesty. “I thought I was alone. I thought you abandoned me. I was terrified.”
Dominic reached out, taking both of her trembling hands into his large, calloused palms. He didn't show anger, or judgment, or disgust. Only a deep, aching tenderness that made her heart ache.
“I know,” he whispered, kissing her knuckles. “And if that is still what you want, Claire, if you want to walk away from this pregnancy, from this life, from me… I will protect you, I will set you up with millions in an account under an alias anywhere in the world, and I will never bother you again. I swear it. But if you want this child… if you want us… then you let me fight for you. You let me burn Vincent’s world to the ground so that our baby can grow up in the light.”
Claire looked down at their joined hands. For weeks, she had felt abandoned, powerless, and discarded. But feeling Dominic’s pulse beating steadily against her skin, seeing the bullet wound he had taken without a second thought to shield her body, she knew there was no running away from this. Her child deserved a father who would take a bullet for them.

“We fight,” Claire whispered, looking up into his eyes. “We take him down.”
Dominic smiled—a fierce, lethal, beautiful smile. “Good. Because Vincent thinks he backed me into a corner. He doesn't know that he just gave me everything to lose.”
