Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Family

The illusion of safety inside the penthouse shattered twenty-four hours later. Claire had spent the night in Dominic’s master bedroom, sleeping fitfully beneath heavy silk sheets while Dominic worked in his adjoining study, the quiet murmur of his voice on encrypted phone lines serving as a grim lullaby.

By mid-afternoon, the penthouse was filled with tension. Marcus had stationed four additional armed guards at the private entrance, while laptops on the dining table displayed real-time surveillance feeds of Vincent Vale’s compound in Barrington.

Claire stood in the kitchen, pouring herself a glass of water, when the heavy double doors of the penthouse opened. A sharp click-clacking of designer high heels echoed across the marble floors, accompanied by the distinct scent of expensive French perfume.

“Dominic!” a woman’s shrill, commanding voice rang out through the hall. “What is the meaning of this lockdown? There are armed men in the lobby turning away the building board!”

Claire poked her head out of the kitchen and froze. Walking into the living room was an elegant woman in her late fifties, wearing an immaculate beige trench coat, diamond stud earrings, and an expression of frozen disdain. Beside her walked a younger woman in a tailored emerald suit, her blonde hair falling in perfect waves around a face sculpted by high cheekbones and privilege.

Dominic emerged from his study, his expression instantly shuttering into cold stone. “Mother. Victoria. What are you doing here?”

Eleanor Vale paused, her sharp gaze sweeping across the room until it locked directly onto Claire, who was standing in the kitchen doorway wearing Dominic’s oversized flannel shirt and sweatpants. Eleanor’s thin lips curled into an icy sneer.

“I see the rumors are true,” Eleanor said, her voice dripping with venom. “My son has compromised a multi-billion-dollar corporate restructuring and brought gunmen to our family name over a common waitress.”

Claire bristled, stepping out from the kitchen. She had spent years handling entitled patrons at Bell & Ash, and she refused to be intimidated by a woman who looked like she hadn’t smiled since the Cold War. “The waitress has a name, Mrs. Vale.”

“Be quiet,” Eleanor snapped dismissively, not even bothering to look Claire directly in the eyes. “You are a brief, catastrophic lapse in my son’s judgment. A gold-digger who let herself get caught out to secure a trust fund.”

“Mother, shut your mouth,” Dominic’s voice cracked across the room like a whip. The sudden venom in his tone made Eleanor take an involuntary step backward. Dominic stepped between his mother and Claire, his tall frame radiating a menace that made even the armed guards look nervous. “You speak to Claire with respect, or Marcus will drag you out of this building by your hair. Do not test me today.”

The younger blonde woman, Victoria, placed a manicured hand on Eleanor’s arm, stepping forward with a cool, venomous smile. Claire recognized her from society magazines—Victoria Sterling, the daughter of a prominent shipping magnate whose family had been allied with the Vales for three decades. For months, the gossip columns had hinted at an arranged union between Victoria and Dominic to consolidate their logistics networks.

“Dominic, please, be reasonable,” Victoria said softly, pitching her voice with practiced sweetness. “Your mother is only concerned about the family legacy. Vincent called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning at ten. He has four major shareholders on his side. He’s going to use this public shootout to invoke the corporate morality clause and strip your voting rights. If you lose control of the board, Vincent takes the company, the bank accounts, everything.”

“Vincent can try,” Dominic said flatly.

Victoria stepped closer, shooting Claire a pitying, triumphant glance before turning her gaze up to Dominic. “He won’t just try, Dom. He will succeed. Unless you announce our engagement today. If the Sterling and Vale shares merge, Vincent doesn't have the numbers. We can issue a press release stating this woman was merely an employee caught in a misunderstanding. We can pay her off handsomely—ten million dollars to sign an NDA and disappear with the child to Europe.”

Claire felt her heart drop. Ten million dollars. To Dominic’s world, that was pocket change. To her, it was astronomical. But the casual cruelty with which Victoria spoke of her unborn baby as an inconvenient PR problem made her blood boil.

“Ten million?” Claire spoke up, her voice steady and ringing through the vaulted room. She walked forward until she was standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Dominic, refusing to hide behind him. “You think you can buy my child like a surplus shipping container?”

Victoria chuckled, an ugly, condescending sound. “Let’s be realistic, darling. You’re twenty-four. You serve drinks for twenty dollars an hour. You have no idea what it takes to survive in this family. Dominic’s world is built on blood and ruthless strategy. You’re an anchor dragging him down to the slaughterhouse. If you truly loved him, you’d take the money and run.”

Claire looked at Victoria, then turned her eyes to Dominic. His face was unreadable, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles jumped.

“Dominic,” Eleanor added, pressing the advantage. “Vincent has the votes. If you don't marry Victoria, our family loses everything my late husband built. Are you really going to sacrifice our dynasty for a girl you knew for a few weeks?”

The penthouse fell dead silent. Claire held her breath, waiting. This was the moment where men like Dominic Vale chose their empires over their hearts. She prepared herself for the inevitable betrayal, her walls snapping back into place to protect the fragile life inside her.

Dominic slowly turned his head toward Victoria, then toward his mother. When he spoke, his voice was deathly quiet, each word forged in pure iron.

“If my father’s dynasty requires me to abandon the woman I love and the child she carries,” Dominic said, “then I will burn that dynasty to the ash and dance on its grave.”

Eleanor gasped, clutching her pearls in genuine shock. Victoria’s face drained of color, her haughty composure crumbling into disbelief.

“Marcus,” Dominic called out coldly.

Marcus stepped forward immediately. “Sir?”

“Escort my mother and Miss Sterling to the elevator,” Dominic ordered, not breaking eye contact with Victoria. “If either of them sets foot on this floor again without Claire’s written permission, have them arrested for trespassing.”

“You’re insane!” Victoria hissed, her voice losing all poise. “You’re throwing away an empire for a nobody! Vincent will destroy you tomorrow!”

“Tell Vincent,” Dominic whispered, leaning in close enough for Victoria to see the lethal promise in his eyes, “that he better bring an army to that boardroom tomorrow. Because I’m not just coming to vote. I’m coming for his head.”
