Chapter 6 - The Confession on the Record

By eleven o'clock that evening, the high-profile arrests of Marcus Vance and Derek Collins were leading every national financial news ticker. But Harper was not resting. She sat in the glass-walled conference room of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois, surrounded by three assistant prosecutors and a mountain of legal briefs. Alexander Ward remained seated in the corner, silent, watchful, his mere presence ensuring that no bureaucratic red tape slowed the proceedings.

Special Agent Henderson placed a recorded deposition device on the center of the table. ""For the record, Ms. Mitchell, please walk us through the primary authentication protocol used during the unauthorized transfer.""

For the next two hours, Harper dismantled Derek Collins’s entire operation piece by piece. She displayed the encrypted shadow ledgers she had retrieved, demonstrating how Derek had used a secondary key derived from Marcus Vance’s executive portal to mask the transactions. She walked the federal team through the intricate web of seven offshore intermediary shells Vance had maintained across three jurisdictions, pointing out duplicated wire vouchers and false corporate resolutions that had eluded standard regulatory audits for over three years.

The junior prosecutors in the room looked at her with open astonishment. What would have taken an entire team of federal investigators six months to untangle, Harper had mapped out cleanly in a single afternoon.

""This is extraordinary work, Ms. Mitchell,"" the lead prosecutor said, closing his folder and shaking his head in admiration. ""Between your forensic trace and the server logs provided by Mr. Ward’s security team, Vance and Collins have zero legal ground to stand on. Their defense attorneys have already reached out regarding a plea bargain. They are offering full asset restitution in exchange for avoiding consecutive federal sentences.""

""Restitution is non-negotiable,"" Harper stated coldly. ""My grandmother's trust must be fully refunded to the designated escrow account before any plea agreement is signed. And I want the public record explicitly amended to clear my professional standing with the regulatory board.""

""Consider it done,"" the prosecutor replied firmly. ""You have not only exonerated yourself, Ms. Mitchell; you have broken open one of the largest corporate embezzlement rings operating in the Midwest. The Department of Justice owes you a significant debt of gratitude.""

As they stepped out of the federal building into the crisp night air, the rain had finally stopped. The Chicago sky was clear, studded with distant stars above the glowing steel canyon of Clark Street.

Harper stopped on the granite plaza, turning to Alexander. The adrenaline that had carried her through the last twenty-four hours was beginning to recede, leaving behind an overwhelming, hollow exhaustion.

""You didn't have to stay through the entire deposition,"" she said quietly.

Alexander stood beside her, his hands resting in the pockets of his overcoat. ""I protect my investments, Harper.""

""The two point eight million has already been flagged for return to Vanguard Horizon,"" Harper pointed out with a faint smile. ""Your money is safe, Mr. Ward. You don't have to keep an eye on me anymore.""

Alexander looked down at her, his gaze intense, penetrating, and entirely unhurried. ""Who said I was talking about the money?""

Harper caught her breath, the cool night air suddenly feeling warm against her skin. Before she could answer, Alexander gestured to his town car idling at the curb. ""You haven't slept in thirty hours. Let me take you somewhere safe.""
