Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Queen

One year after the night she stood drenched in the doorway of the Hollow Room, Harper Ward walked down the red-carpeted aisle of the Fourth Presbyterian Church on Michigan Avenue. The autumn sun streamed through the historic stained-glass windows, casting vibrant pools of sapphire, gold, and ruby across the stone floor.

She wore an exquisite ivory gown of French lace and structured silk that trailed behind her in a dramatic, regal sweep. There was no hesitation in her step, no lingering shadow of the girl who had once doubted her worth in the face of betrayal. Beside her at the altar stood Alexander, his eyes filled with a quiet, breathtaking awe that silenced the entire cathedral.

When Alexander slipped the platinum band onto her finger, sealing their vows before the city's highest leaders, friends, and family, the applause that filled the nave was thunderous.

That evening, the reception was held in the fully restored and privately reserved Hollow Room. The dark walnut walls glowed with candlelight; the jazz pianist played a warm, rolling melody, and laughter filled the room that had once been an intimidating sanctuary for Chicago’s most ruthless men.

Harper stood near the corner booth—the very booth where her life had been rewritten. She held a glass of vintage champagne, watching the people she cared about celebrate around her.

Alexander appeared at her side, handing her a silver key attached to a leather tag.

""What is this?"" Harper asked, looking up at her husband with an amused smile.

""A key to the front door of the Evanston house,"" Alexander replied, his scar softening as he smiled down at her. ""The contractors finished the renovation this morning. The foundation is solid, Harper. The roots are deep. And it belongs entirely to you.""

Harper slipped the key into her clutch, wrapping her free arm around his neck. ""We don't need a house in Evanston to prove we built something real, Alexander. We already have everything we need right here.""

""Are you happy, Mrs. Ward?"" he whispered, his hands resting securely on her waist, drawing her close as the music slowed to an intimate waltz.

Harper looked around the warm, glowing room, then met the dark, loving eyes of the only man who had never lied to her. The panic attacks, the frozen rain, the empty accounts, and the bitter betrayal were gone, burned away like mist under a rising sun. In their place stood an empire, a shared legacy, and a love forged in the fire of absolute truth.

""I have never been happier,"" Harper answered, and as his lips met hers in the center of the room, she knew that this time, the ledger was balanced forever."
