Chapter 4 - The Gala Ambush

The Grand Staircase of the Art Institute was lined with towering arrangements of white orchids and black velvet drapery. Violins drifted down from the balcony, mixing with the low, cultured hum of Chicago's elite sipping champagne. Men in classic black tuxedos and women draped in couture diamonds gathered in clusters, laughing quietly over the latest market movements. At the center of the main rotunda stood Marcus Vance, holding court. He looked the picture of executive poise—silver-haired, impeccably tailored, holding a glass of vintage Dom Pérignon while accepting quiet condolences and praise from city council members for his firm's swift response to the morning's tragic financial scandal.

""It is a heartbreaking situation,"" Vance was telling a local reporter from the Chicago Tribune, his voice laced with practiced sorrow. ""Harper Mitchell was one of our brightest talents. We treated her like family. To see such greed undermine a brilliant career is a cautionary tale for all of us. Caldwell Mercer will, of course, make every victim whole.""

""How generous of you, Marcus,"" a voice cut through the ambient conversation like a sharpened scalpel.

The circle around Vance parted instantly.

Alexander Ward walked into the rotunda. His presence commandingly silenced the immediate perimeter. He wore a midnight-blue tuxedo that accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding height. But it was not Alexander who caused Marcus Vance's smile to freeze solid on his face.

It was the woman on his arm.

Harper looked entirely unrecognizable from the rain-soaked woman who had collapsed in the Hollow Room twenty-four hours earlier. She wore an emerald-green silk column gown with a high architectural neckline and an open back that displayed the proud, unbroken line of her spine. Her dark auburn hair was swept into an intricate, polished updo, showcasing diamond teardrop earrings that caught the grand chandelier light. Her chin was held high, her eyes clear, steady, and terrifyingly calm.

""Harper?"" Vance stammered, his fingers tightening around the stem of his champagne flute so hard the crystal creaked. ""What... what is the meaning of this? Ward, do you know who this woman is? There is an active warrant for her arrest!""

Two private security guards moved forward from the perimeter, but Alexander merely glanced in their direction. The cold authority in that single look caused both men to halt mid-stride.

""There is an active inquiry, Marcus,"" Harper corrected in a clear, resonant tone that carried across the hushed rotunda. ""Not a warrant. Because to issue a warrant, the compliance director must submit an authentic mirrored audit log to the district attorney. And you couldn't do that today, could you?""

Vance’s face shifted from shocked disbelief to a blotchy, mottled crimson. ""You are having an emotional breakdown, Harper. Escort her out of here immediately! She is attempting to defame this institution after stealing over eleven million dollars!""

""The eleven million dollars currently frozen in escrow at Helvetia Private Bank under transaction tag Seven-Alpha-Nine?"" Harper continued smoothly, taking a deliberate step forward. She didn't shout; she spoke with the calm precision of a senior forensic specialist delivering a board presentation. Several corporate executives nearby turned their heads, their expressions shifting from polite curiosity to sharp professional alert.

""Everyone here knows that transaction tag protocols are assigned exclusively to equity partners,"" Harper announced, her voice ringing off the marble arches. ""I was a senior associate. I didn't hold clearance for Seven-Alpha routing. But you did, Marcus. And when my fiancé Derek Collins accessed my workstation yesterday morning, he used a custom macro generated from your private server terminal.""

""This is slander!"" Vance hissed, his voice cracking. He looked frantically toward the museum exits, but Miller and three of Ward’s private security details were already standing casually in front of every egress point.

""It's forensic mathematics,"" Alexander Ward interrupted, his voice dropping into the quiet hall like an iron weight. ""And unfortunately for you, Vance, my firm happened to be the counterparty to your little domestic offshore operation. Did you really believe you could skim Vanguard Horizon's clearing reserves without my auditors tracing the source?""

Before Vance could respond, a sudden commotion erupted near the entrance of the Modern Wing gallery.

A man in an ill-fitting trench coat, his hair disheveled and his eyes wide with erratic fury, pushed past an usher. ""Marcus! You son of a bitch, your accounts are blocked!""

Derek Collins stumbled into the rotunda, clutching an overnight duffel bag. He had clearly straight-shotted from O'Hare, his face pale and haggard, completely unaware of the public spectacle until he stopped dead in his tracks.

His eyes locked onto Harper.

The color drained from Derek's face until he looked like a corpse in a designer suit. ""Harper?"" he gasped, his jaw slackening. ""You... you were supposed to be...""

""Arrested?"" Harper finished for him, her voice devoid of any warmth, any nostalgia, any trace of the woman who had spent three years loving him. ""Or perhaps sleeping on the street with empty pockets? Did you have a good flight from Zurich, Derek? I assume you flew coach, considering your credit cards were declined at the terminal gate.""
