Chapter 3 - The Audit Begins

Eleanor turned her attention back to Richard, who looked ready to collapse onto the Persian rug.

"Now, young man," Eleanor said, folding her hands calmly over her coat. "Let us discuss your leadership."

"Madame Bellamy, I beg of you, give me another chance," Richard whined, his arrogance entirely dissolved into pathetic groveling. "I have dedicated six years to this boutique! I brought our quarterly sales up by fourteen percent! I was only protecting the merchandise!"

"You were protecting your commission," Eleanor corrected sharply. "And you discarded an honest employee without asking a single question."

Arthur stepped forward, opening the red leather folio he had brought down from the executive suite.

"Madame Bellamy," Arthur whispered, his eyes scanning a confidential internal memo tucked inside the cover. "There is another matter regarding Mr. Richard's tenure here that we flagged last week."

Richard’s eyes widened in sudden, visceral panic.

"Arthur, no, that was a clerical error—"

"Quiet," Arthur ordered.

He turned the document toward Eleanor, allowing her to inspect the forensic accounting sheet.

"Our loss-prevention auditors noticed an irregular pattern of discounted off-the-books sales from the haute couture vault over the past eighteen months," Arthur explained. "Garments marked as 'damaged in transit' were repeatedly resold through private social media channels at ninety percent of retail value."

Claire listened from the sidelines, her heart pounding as she recognized the ledger codes.

For months, Claire had noticed pristine silk gowns being bundled into plain black garment bags and carried out the back alley exit during Richard's evening shifts.

Whenever she had asked about standard return logs, Richard had threatened to dock her pay for interfering with inventory management.

"Claire," Eleanor said, her warm voice cutting through the heavy tension. "Did you ever witness these transactions?"

Claire hesitated, glancing at Richard.

The manager was glaring at her with venomous hatred, his jaw tight, his eyes silently warning her to keep her mouth shut.

Claire remembered the overdue electric bill sitting on her kitchen table, and the cold cruelty with which he had fired her just ten minutes prior.

"Yes, Madame Bellamy," Claire spoke up, her voice clear and steady. "Every third Thursday of the month, Mr. Richard had two private couriers arrive after closing. He personally bypassed the electronic tag scanners and logged the dresses as unsalvageable water damage."

"You lying little gutter rat!" Richard lunged forward, his face twisted in rage, but Arthur caught him by the arm and shoved him back toward the wall.

"Step back, Richard, before I have the police arrest you for assault right here on the carpet!" Arthur warned furiously.

Eleanor didn't look surprised; she simply nodded with the quiet sorrow of someone who had seen greed corrupt good institutions for half a century.

"Arthur, notify the district attorney's financial crimes division," Eleanor directed calmly. "Freeze his corporate access, impound his store computer, and secure every surveillance drive from the last two years."

"Right away, Madame," Arthur responded, signaling the head of building security.

The security guard stepped forward, took Richard firmly by both shoulders, and unpinned his gold manager badge from his lapel.

"You're making a mistake!" Richard screamed as he was led toward the private service corridor in disgrace. "I built this floor! You can't run this store without me! You'll go under in a month!"

Eleanor watched him disappear behind the heavy fire doors without blinking an eye.

She turned to Claire, her expression softening into the kind, grandmotherly warmth that had walked through the front doors an hour ago.

"Now, child," Eleanor said gently. "I believe we still have an appointment in the fitting room."
