Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

Richard's face transformed through three distinct shades of crimson before settling into an ashen, sickly gray.
His chest heaved against his tailored European shirt as his mind scrambled to reconstruct the catastrophic miscalculation he had just committed in front of forty high-paying patrons.
"Madame Bellamy, please forgive me!" Richard pleaded, stumbling forward with his hands clasped together in desperate supplication. "I didn't recognize you! You haven't made a public appearance in over a decade, and—and you were dressed so... modestly!"
"Dressed like a woman who doesn't believe in flaunting wealth to buy respect?" Eleanor asked, her voice dropping into an icy register.
"I was merely trying to resolve a customer dispute!" Richard stammered, frantically pointing a trembling finger toward Vanessa Whitmore. "Mrs. Whitmore is our premier diamond-tier account! She complained of misconduct, and store protocol dictates prioritizing tier-one clientele!"
"Store protocol does not dictate humiliating innocent people," Eleanor responded without flinching.
Vanessa stepped forward, her diamond tennis bracelets rattling loudly against each other as she attempted to salvage her social superiority.
"Now wait just a minute," Vanessa interrupted, adopting the haughty drawl that normally terrified service workers across the Upper East Side. "Even if you are Julian Bellamy's widow, that doesn't excuse this associate's insubordination. She was argumentative, disrespectful, and challenged my standing in front of other shoppers."
Eleanor turned slowly to face the socialite, studying her with absolute poise.
"You told this young woman that I couldn't afford the zipper on a dress," Eleanor said quietly. "Is that your definition of standing, Mrs. Whitmore?"
Vanessa flushed, her posture stiffening under the collective stares of the entire room.
"I spend half a million dollars annually in this establishment!" Vanessa declared, lifting her chin defiantly. "My husband sits on the board of three major investment banks! I expect an exclusive shopping environment, not an open playground for thrift-store charity cases!"
Arthur Sterling looked like he was about to suffer a stroke on the spot, but Eleanor merely held up one gloved finger to halt him.
"You spend money here because our craftsmen put their souls into these garments," Eleanor said, her voice resonant and unyielding. "You do not own this house. You do not dictate who enters its doors. And you certainly do not purchase the right to demean the human beings who work here."
Vanessa scoffed, tossing the navy gown carelessly onto a nearby glass display table.
"If this is how you treat your best customers, I'll take my business to Paris," Vanessa sneered, reaching for her mink stole. "Cancel my orders, Richard. Close my account. You will regret treating me like a common bystander."
"Your account is already closed, Mrs. Whitmore," Eleanor stated evenly.
Vanessa froze halfway through draping her stole over her shoulders.
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me," Eleanor continued, turning to Arthur. "Arthur, instruct corporate legal to revoke Mrs. Whitmore's VIP status across every brand under the Bellamy umbrella worldwide. She is permanently banned from our premises."
Vanessa's mouth opened in pure shock, but no words came out.
"Security," Arthur barked instantly to the two guards standing near the front entrance. "Escort Mrs. Whitmore to the street. If she refuses, notify the precinct."

The socialite snatched her purse, her cheeks burning with pure fury and shame, and stormed toward the revolving doors under the watching eyes of Manhattan’s elite.
The heavy glass doors spun behind her, leaving a stunned silence in the opulent boutique.
