Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Galley

Marcus took the spiral notebook from Lily’s hands. His eyes moved rapidly across the neat, pencil-ruled lines, taking in the meticulous notes, the recorded quotes, and the chronological breakdown of Amanda Sterling's behavior since boarding began. A slow, chilling frown formed on his face.

""Sir, are you seriously entertaining the scribblings of an elementary school kid?"" Amanda Sterling demanded, her voice shrill and trembling with rising panic. ""This is an invasion of privacy! She was spying on me! I demand you return that notebook and escort that child to the rear lavatory area!""

Marcus closed the notebook with a sharp snap that sounded like a gunshot in the hushed cabin.

""Mrs. Sterling,"" Marcus said in a voice as cold as ice. ""Flight attendants are trained to observe passenger interactions. I noticed your demeanor during boarding. And right now, you are raising your voice at crew members, insulting a military family, and causing a significant cabin disturbance at thirty-five thousand feet.""

""I am an executive client!"" she hissed, taking a step toward him. ""You work for the airline, which means you work for me! Do you know how much money my company spends on your carrier every single quarter?""

While Amanda Sterling continued her self-destructive tirade, Lily glanced at the forward bulkhead wall. Hanging right beside the cockpit door was the flight attendant interphone handset—the public address microphone used for safety announcements and captain briefings.

Lily knew how airplanes worked. Her father had spent hours explaining every detail of aircraft operations during his leaves, teaching her never to be intimidated by authority figures when truth and justice were on the line.

""Marcus,"" Sarah whispered, stepping into the galley. ""Captain Miller called from the flight deck. He wants to know what's causing the commotion outside the cockpit door.""

""Tell the captain we are handling an unruly passenger in row twelve,"" Marcus instructed without turning his head.

Amanda Sterling crossed her arms, a vicious sneer returning to her face. ""Go ahead, call the captain! Tell him a mother brought an screaming infant into a premium zone and disrupted high-paying professionals! Let's see who gets escorted off the aircraft in handcuffs when we land in San Diego!""

From seat 15B, I watched in agony, clutching Noah tightly against my chest. Other passengers in rows ten through fourteen were now openly whispering, glaring at Amanda with undisguised disgust. But Amanda remained completely oblivious to the room, convinced that her wealth and corporate status granted her total immunity.

Lily stood quietly in the shadow of the galley curtain. She looked at Marcus, who was occupied checking the passenger manifest on his tablet to confirm our original seat reservations. Then, she looked at the public address handset.

Lily knew that if this dispute remained a private argument in the galley, airline bureaucracy might simply sweep it under the rug to avoid corporate complaints. She knew that bullies only thrive when their cruelty remains hidden in quiet corners.

Lily took a deep, steadying breath. With deliberate courage, she reached out her hand and lifted the flight attendant microphone from its magnetic cradle.
