Chapter 11 - The Video That Followed Us Home

For exactly twelve minutes after we left the airport, I believed the nightmare was over.

David drove my parents’ SUV along Harbor Drive with one hand on the wheel and the other resting over mine. Lily sat behind us beside Noah’s car seat, still wearing Captain Miller’s gold wings on her denim jacket.

The San Diego sun was beginning to drop toward the ocean, turning the sky orange.

Everything felt safe again.

Then David’s phone started vibrating.

Once.

Twice.

Then continuously.

He glanced at the screen at a red light.

“What is happening?”

My own phone buzzed inside my purse.

My mother’s followed.

Then Lily’s tablet began chiming from her backpack.

David pulled into a parking lot overlooking the bay.

I opened my phone.

The first thing I saw was a video.

SOMEONE’S TEN-YEAR-OLD TOOK OVER AN AIRPLANE PA SYSTEM—AND THE WHOLE CABIN CHEERED.

The clip already had hundreds of thousands of views.

Someone sitting near row fourteen had recorded Lily’s announcement from beginning to end. The video showed Amanda screaming in the aisle. It showed Marcus blocking her from reaching Lily. It showed passengers applauding.

Most of the comments praised Lily.

Then I found another video.

Amanda Sterling had posted it herself.

She was sitting in what appeared to be an airport lounge, wearing a borrowed sweater over her stained clothes. Her mascara had run beneath her eyes.

She looked nothing like the arrogant woman from the plane.

She looked fragile.

Victimized.

Terrified.

And she was crying directly into the camera.

“Today, a child was allowed to seize an aircraft communication system and publicly accuse me of crimes while flight attendants stood by,” Amanda said. “I was threatened, humiliated, and removed from my purchased seat because I asked a mother to control her children.”

My stomach dropped.

“That isn’t what happened,” Lily whispered.

Amanda continued.

“I understand the internet loves dramatic stories, but there are two sides to every situation. I have contacted legal counsel. I have also requested a formal investigation into the crew that permitted a minor to interfere with safety equipment during an active commercial flight.”

David’s jaw tightened.

The video cut before Amanda’s seat reassignment.

It showed nothing about her refusing our seats.

Nothing about her screaming at Sarah.

Nothing about her admitting she had manipulated the gate agent.

Nothing about the tomato juice.

She had rebuilt the entire story around herself.

I refreshed the page.

Another hundred comments appeared.

Some supported us.

Others were already turning.

A child should NEVER touch aircraft equipment.

Where was her mother?

Sounds like attention-seeking parenting.

The flight crew should be fired.

Lily stared silently at the screen.

I immediately locked my phone.

“Don’t read the comments.”

“But they’re talking about me.”

“I know.”

“They’re saying I endangered the plane.”

“You didn’t.”

“But I used the microphone without permission.”

David turned around in his seat.

His expression was gentle but serious.

“Lily, what you did was brave. But bravery doesn’t mean every decision we make is automatically perfect.”

Her eyes dropped.

“You should not have taken the microphone without permission,” he continued. “That part is true.”

Lily swallowed.

“Am I in trouble?”

“No.”

“Is Captain Miller?”

That question hit harder.

David didn’t answer immediately.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered cautiously.

“Hello?”

“This is Rebecca Sloan with Northstar Airways Corporate Communications. Am I speaking with Mrs. Vance?”

“Yes.”

“We need to discuss Flight 842.”

My shoulders stiffened.

Rebecca’s tone was polished but urgent.

“First, I want to assure you that your family’s welfare is important to us. However, because video of the event has become public, the airline has initiated a formal internal review.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means all crew actions will be examined.”

I looked at David.

“Including Captain Miller?”

There was a pause.

“Yes.”

Lily heard.

Her face changed instantly.

Rebecca continued.

“Until the review is completed, Captain Miller has been removed from active flight duty.”

Lily’s mouth fell open.

“No,” she whispered.

I gripped the phone tighter.

“You’re suspending the captain because a passenger stole our seats and harassed my daughter?”

“That is not what I said.”

“That is exactly what it sounds like.”

“Mrs. Vance, the airline must determine whether cockpit security procedures and cabin communication protocols were followed.”

“What about Amanda Sterling?”

“Our passenger conduct department is reviewing that separately.”

“Separately?”

David held out his hand.

I gave him the phone.

“This is Lieutenant Commander David Vance,” he said calmly. “Before this conversation continues, I want the name and employee identification number of everyone assigned to this review.”

Rebecca’s voice changed.

“Sir, I’m not authorized—”

“Then connect us with someone who is.”

Lily stared through the windshield toward the harbor.

The excitement had vanished from her face.

Captain Miller had honored her.

He had defended us.

Now he had lost his cockpit because of what happened.

“Dad?”

David covered the phone.

“Yes?”

“If I hadn’t taken the microphone, Captain Miller would still be flying.”

David turned toward her.

“We don’t know that.”

“But maybe.”

Her eyes filled.

For the first time that entire day, my fearless daughter looked truly afraid.

Not for herself.

For someone else.

And as I watched her touch the gold wings pinned to her jacket, I realized Amanda Sterling had found the one weapon that might actually hurt Lily.

Guilt.
