Chapter 8 - The Domino Effect

The power of modern digital algorithms was terrifyingly swift. When you combine seventy thousand roaring fans, multiple viral TikTok recordings from different angles, and a national broadcast feed that had caught the entire incident during a timeout, the internet does what it does best: it executes total, unsparing karmic retribution.
The hashtag #SeatPirates was already trending at number one nationwide.
Videos of Brenda blowing kisses to the crowd before the damning graphic appeared had already accumulated four million views on TikTok. Comment sections across Instagram, Reddit, and Facebook were exploding with outrage. The contrast between my frail, eighty-five-year-old father sitting quietly in his worn flannel jacket and the arrogant, sneering faces of Richard and Brenda Sterling had struck a deep, universal chord of collective fury.
By the time the third quarter got underway, the fallout had spilled far beyond social media banter. Local news networks were broadcasting live segments outside the stadium gates. Internet sleuths had wasted no time identifying Richard Sterling’s private equity firm and Brenda’s boutique luxury real estate agency.
Marcus showed me an urgent press release that had just been uploaded to the website of Sterling & Croft Asset Management:
""The executive board has been made aware of the deeply disturbing behavior exhibited by senior partner Richard Sterling at tonight’s game. The values displayed are entirely contrary to our corporate ethics and commitment to community respect. Effective immediately, Mr. Sterling has been placed on indefinite, unpaid administrative leave pending a formal termination review, and his corporate credentials have been permanently revoked.""
Moments later, Brenda’s real estate franchise issued an equally devastating statement, announcing that her contract as a premier broker had been immediately severed and that all promotional billboard advertisements featuring her likeness would be removed within forty-eight hours to protect the agency's reputation.

""They thought they were above the rules because they had money and influence,"" Marcus murmured, watching the field below as our team scored another touchdown. ""They looked at your father and saw someone weak and disposable. They forgot that respect doesn't have an expiration date, and cruelty always extracts a price.""
I looked across the private box toward my father. He hadn't touched his phone. He had no idea what was happening online, and he didn't care. He was completely lost in the magic of the game, cheering wildly as our star wide receiver caught a diving thirty-yard touchdown pass in the back corner of the end zone. For Dad, the noise of the outside world had vanished; all that existed was the pure, beautiful game he had loved his entire life.
