Chapter 5 - The Public Reckoning

A sudden, sharp silence began to sweep through Section 114, gradually expanding outward like a shockwave through the entire bowl of the stadium.

Across the bottom third of the Jumbotron, a bold, pulsing crimson banner materialized. The text was rendered in massive, four-foot-tall block capital letters, impossible for anyone in the arena to miss:

""SEAT PIRATES OF THE GAME: OCCUPYING SEATS 12 & 13 WITHOUT A TICKET""

Brenda was still waving, her manicured fingers fluttering in the air, before her eyes flicked upward to the corner of the scoreboard display. Her arm froze mid-wave. Richard’s cocky grin vanished, his jaw dropping open in sheer bewilderment.

Before either of them could react, the graphics department swapped the lower-third banner for a split-screen display. On the left side of the screen remained the live, horrified feed of Richard and Brenda. On the right side, the screen flashed an official, high-resolution graphic of the legitimate tickets—complete with the barcode and the purchaser’s name: LEO & ARTHUR MILLER (85-YEAR-OLD VETERAN & STROKE SURVIVOR).

And then, in bold, unmistakable yellow lettering right across the center of their faces, the screen displayed the exact transcript captured by the directional field microphone that had picked up Brenda's vicious remark:

""HE'S OLD. HE WON'T EVEN BE ABLE TO SEE THE GAME ANYWAY.""

The stadium announcer’s voice returned over the stadium's sound system, completely devoid of its earlier commercial cheer, replaced instead by a cold, searing tone of public shaming:

""At this stadium, we honor our veterans, our elders, and true sportsmanship. We do not tolerate seat theft, nor do we tolerate cruel disrespect toward our community's seniors. Security is now en route to Section 114 to escort these unauthorized occupants out of the building.""

The crowd didn't just gasp; they erupted. A sound like a rolling avalanche rose from seventy thousand chests—a deafening, unified chorus of furious boos, jeers, and angry shouts that shook the steel beams of the upper deck. Fans directly around Row Four jumped to their feet, pointing aggressively at the couple.

""Shame on you!"" a middle-aged woman screamed, throwing a half-eaten bag of popcorn directly at Richard’s chest.

""Get them out of here! Disgraceful!"" roared a massive man wearing a linebacker jersey two seats down.

Richard’s face drained of every ounce of color, turning an ashen, sickly white. Brenda let out a high-pitched shriek of pure panic, throwing her handbag over her face to block the camera lens, but the camera operator smoothly maintained focus, panning down as she stumbled backward over the cup holders. People throughout the lower bowl began pulling out their smartphones, filming the couple as their exposed faces were broadcast across the colossal arena monitors.

Within seconds, four towering stadium security guards wearing neon tactical vests and two local police officers strode rapidly down the aisle of Section 114, parting the shouting crowd like the Red Sea. Richard tried to bluster, waving his wallet and screaming about his legal connections, but the lead officer placed a heavy hand squarely against his chest, while another officer firmly grabbed Brenda by the arm, guiding them both out of the row under a relentless barrage of boos and flying paper cups. They didn't just walk out—they practically sprinted up the tunnel stairs, desperate to escape the blinding light of public humiliation.
