Chapter 4 - The Golden Spotlight

I walked back down the concrete steps of Section 114 carrying two steaming cups of hot cocoa and a warm pretzel dusted with rock salt. When I sat down beside my father on the hard metal folding chairs near the ramp, he smiled warmly, wrapping his shaking hands around the cardboard cup.
""Did you take care of your business, son?"" he asked, blowing gently on the steam rising from the lid.
""Yes, Dad,"" I replied, taking a seat and draping my arm across his frail shoulders. ""Everything is being handled. Just watch the field. Look at the coverage on that safety.""
For the next twenty minutes, Dad was completely entranced. His eyes darted across the emerald field, tracking the parabolic arc of the football through the air. Whenever our team executed a perfect slant route or stuffed a third-down conversion, his face lit up with an unadulterated, childlike joy that made every drop of sweat I had spilled in the garage worth it. Down in Row Four, the couple continued their obnoxious behavior—standing up during live plays, waving their arms blindly, and shouting profanities at the visiting sideline while throwing peanut shells behind them. Several families sitting nearby shifted uncomfortably, but no one dared confront them. Richard Sterling had the kind of aggressive, litigious demeanor that signaled he would sue anyone who touched his shoulder.
The game clock ticked down toward the end of the second quarter: 2:04... 2:01... 2:00.
The referee’s whistle blew with a piercing blast, signaling the official two-minute warning timeout. The stadium lights dimmed slightly as the massive, six-story ultra-high-definition Jumbotron suspended over the fifty-yard line flickered to life. The stadium announcer’s thunderous, booming voice resonated through the massive acoustic speakers:
""Ladies and gentlemen, fans in the stadium and viewers watching at home on the digital network! It's time for our mid-game spotlight: The Community Fan of the Night!""
Usually, this segment was reserved for cute couples proposing, young children holding hand-painted signs, or military service members returning from overseas deployment. The crowd began clapping rhythmically, thousands of heads turning toward the colossal digital screen.
Down in Row Four, Brenda Sterling immediately touched up her lip gloss, while Richard adjusted his designer sunglasses onto the bridge of his nose, clearly hoping the sweeping camera might catch a glimpse of their expensive outfits.
Suddenly, the screen cut from the commercial graphic directly to a crisp, high-definition live feed.
It wasn't a wide shot of the crowd. It was an extreme, crystal-clear close-up of Richard and Brenda Sterling, sitting comfortably in Row Four, Seats 12 and 13.

Brenda saw her face appear on the six-story screen and instantly gasped in delight. Believing she was being featured as a VIP fan, she squealed, nudged Richard violently with her elbow, and stood up, raising both arms in the air like a pageant queen. She blew dramatic kisses to the seventy thousand people watching, while Richard puffed out his chest, flashed a dazzling, porcelain-veneered smile, and pointed finger-guns directly into the camera lens.
They had no idea that beneath their glowing, blown-up faces, Marcus’s operations team was about to drop the hammer.
