Chapter 7 - The Viper's Last Bargain

The warehouse erupted into a tempest of gunfire. Russo’s remaining four men dropped behind steel container drums, opening fire toward Matteo's position. But Matteo had already anticipated the volley, diving behind a reinforced steel forklift as bullets sparked violently off the hydraulic lift.

Marco moved like a ghost along the eastern wall, firing with surgical precision. Two of Russo's men fell within five seconds, neutralized before they could reload their magazines. The remaining enforcers, realizing they were outmatched and outmaneuvered, threw down their weapons and raised their hands in surrender against the far wall.

Russo, seeing his support evaporate, turned and sprinted along the elevated catwalk toward the fire escape leading to the pier dock below.

Matteo vaulted onto the metal staircase, his long strides eating up the distance. He reached the upper platform just as Russo kicked open the rusted emergency door, stepping out into the driving rain.

The Cooper River surged violently beneath the pier, black water churning against the pilings. Russo spun around, raising his pistol, but Matteo was faster. Matteo lunged forward, his left hand deflecting Russo’s wrist upward as a shot blew uselessly into the stormy night sky. Matteo drove a vicious knee into Russo’s ribs, followed by a sweeping hook that sent the older mobster crashing hard against the safety railing.

Russo’s gun slipped from his wet fingers, tumbling thirty feet down into the dark, churning river below.

Russo lay on his back, coughing, the cold rain plastering his gray hair to his forehead. He looked up at Matteo, who stood over him, the barrel of his Colt aimed squarely between Russo’s eyes.

""Wait... wait!"" Russo wheezed, holding up both hands, his arrogance completely evaporating into pathetic desperation. ""Let's talk, Matteo! We go back thirty years! Your father... your father knew my father!""

""My father despised you,"" Matteo said, his finger tightening imperceptibly on the trigger. ""He told me you were a coward who hid behind poisoned cups and paid assassins.""

""I can give you Whitmore!"" Russo pleaded, his voice rising over the roar of the wind. ""I have the offshore accounts! I have the wire transfers proving he bought the paralytics from a rogue lab in Zurich! I have the records proving he orchestrated the car crash that weakened Harper before the heart attack! If you kill me, that evidence dies with me!""

""The evidence is already on this drive,"" Matteo said, tapping his jacket pocket where Nicholas Harper's ledger rested safely. ""Nicholas documented every meeting, every shipment, and every bribe Whitmore ever accepted on your behalf. You are irrelevant, Dominic.""

Russo stared into the absolute void of Matteo's dark eyes, realizing that for the first time in his life, money, threats, and political connections meant nothing. He was standing face-to-face with the true head of the Bellucci family, a man whose judgment was final.

""Please,"" Russo whispered, the rain washing away his pride. ""Don't kill me.""

Matteo looked down at the trembling old monster for a long, silent moment. The rain beat down upon them like a baptism of cold iron. Slowly, Matteo lowered the weapon.

""A bullet is too clean for you, Dominic,"" Matteo said, his voice cutting through the storm. ""You are going to spend the rest of your miserable life in a federal penitentiary in Colorado, stripped of every cent, every warehouse, and every shred of power you ever stole. You will die alone in a concrete box, forgotten by the world.""

Down below, the blue and red flashing lights of Captain Miller's federal convoy rounded the pier entrance, illuminating the rain-swept dock in brilliant hues of justice. Marco stepped onto the catwalk, looking at his boss with silent approval.

""Secure him,"" Matteo ordered, turning his back on Russo without looking back. ""The rain has stopped.""
