Chapter 3 - The Coldest Altar

The gasp that swept through the garden was collective and deafening. Photographers lowered their cameras in disbelief, and the string quartet abruptly stopped mid-measure, the harsh scrape of a cello bow breaking the stillness.

Nathan Whitmore’s smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a flash of naked fury. He squinted against the sun, peering down the long aisle lined with white rose petals. When his eyes landed on Matteo Bellucci standing with Lucy Harper resting in his arms, Nathan’s composure began to fray at the edges.

""Matteo?"" Nathan’s voice cracked slightly through the lapel microphone he wore. He forced an awkward, theatrical laugh to salvage the moment before the gathered elite. ""What kind of joke is this? If you're looking for the reception bar, it opens after the benediction.""

Matteo did not smile. He did not rush his stride. Carrying Lucy with the steady, protective grace of a father, he began walking down the center aisle. The guests shrank back against their folding chairs as he passed, intimidated by the sheer intensity in his dark eyes.

""This isn't a wedding, Whitmore,"" Matteo said, his voice carrying effortlessly without the aid of a microphone. ""It's a corporate takeover executed under chemical duress.""

A shocked whisper rippled through the pews. Elena blinked rapidly, as if the sound of Matteo's voice were a cold drop of water striking her face in a dark room. She turned her head toward him, her gaze traveling from Matteo down to the little girl held against his chest.

""Lucy...?"" Elena breathed, her voice raspy, fragile, barely audible. ""Lucy, where were you?""

""Mommy!"" Lucy called out, her voice clear and piercing. ""Don't marry him! He makes the bad tea! He puts medicine in your cup so you don't remember!""

Nathan’s face turned an ugly, mottled shade of crimson. ""Someone get security over here right now!"" he barked, stepping away from the altar and motioning toward the perimeter guards hired by the Whitmore family. ""Mr. Bellucci has clearly had too much to drink, and he's terrifying my stepdaughter. Remove him from the property immediately!""

Four private security guards in dark suits moved quickly from the perimeter, closing in on Matteo. But before they could take three paces, two sleek black Cadillac Escalades crashed through the ornamental side hedge of the estate, tearing across the immaculate lawn and skidding to a halt twenty yards from the pavilion. Marco Kanti and five heavily built men in tailored charcoal suits stepped out, their coats unbuttoned just enough to reveal the matte-black holsters resting beneath their armpits.

The private guards stopped dead in their tracks. Nobody who understood the Bellucci family ever reached for a weapon first.

Matteo stopped five feet from the altar, looking down at Nathan with an expression of cold, clinical disgust. ""Your security won't touch me, Nathan. And you won't touch Elena Harper again.""

""Are you insane?"" Nathan hissed, his voice dropping into a desperate, venomous growl as he tried to keep the guests from hearing every syllable. ""We signed a seventeen-million-dollar deal on Thursday! I am bringing you the entire Carolinas distribution corridor! You throw that away for a hysterical woman and a child?""

""The deal you signed on Thursday was built on stolen shipments you hijacked from my ports in Jacksonville and Norfolk,"" Matteo replied, stepping forward until he loomed over the younger man. ""You sold my cargo to Dominic Russo to pay off your private gambling debts in the Bahamas, and then you promised Russo the Harper shipping docks as your permanent payoff.""

Nathan blanched, the blood draining completely from his face. ""You have no proof of that. You're slandering me in front of my family, in front of the press—""

""I don't deal in slander,"" Matteo said coldly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small pink glitter box Lucy had handed him by the pond. He opened it, revealing the scratched black phone. ""Your voice is exceptionally clear on this recording, Nathan. Especially the part where you explain how many milligrams of synthetic benzos it takes to keep Elena compliant enough to sign her company away on Monday morning.""

Elena gasped. Her hands flew to her mouth as the fog that had clouded her consciousness for weeks seemed to rip open all at once. The nightly tea. The sweet, bitter aftertaste she had ignored. The agonizing morning headaches. The lost hours where documents appeared on her desk already bearing her signature.

She looked at Nathan, seeing the monster behind the immaculate smile for the very first time.

""You..."" Elena whispered, tears of horror welling in her eyes as she took three staggering steps backward, away from the man she was about to marry. ""You killed Nicholas, didn't you?""

Nathan’s jaw worked silently for a second. The mask of the Southern gentleman shattered, revealing the desperate, cornered rat underneath. He reached out violently, lunging to grab Elena by the wrist to pull her behind him as a shield. ""You shut your mouth, Elena! You belong to me!""

May you like

He never touched her.

Matteo handed Lucy gently into Clara's waiting arms, stepped forward, and drove his right fist straight into Nathan Whitmore's jaw with the force of an oncoming freight train.
