Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Safehouse

The Bellucci family estate on Sullivan's Island stood behind high iron gates and ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss, miles away from the chaos and sirens of Charleston. Built like a fortress behind the appearance of an antebellum coastal manor, the property offered state-of-the-art security, bulletproof glass, and an uninterrupted view of the Atlantic tides.

Elena sat on a velvet sofa in the library, wrapped in a heavy cashmere blanket that Matteo had draped over her shoulders. She had washed the makeup from her face and exchanged the torn wedding gown for a simple oversized sweater and jeans provided by Matteo’s staff. Lucy was fast asleep on an adjacent armchair, clutching a plush bear, her breathing finally rhythmic and peaceful.

A private physician, Dr. Samuel Vance—a trusted Bellucci associate bound by absolute discretion—stepped into the library, rolling down his shirtsleeves. Matteo stood by the mahogany fireplace, listening attentively.

""The blood work confirms everything,"" Dr. Vance reported in a hushed tone. ""She was being administered high doses of a compound called Flunitrazepam, mixed with low-grade scopolamine. In small, nightly doses, it causes severe retrograde amnesia and extreme suggestibility. It leaves the subject functional during the day, but incapable of forming long-term memories or resisting authoritative commands.""

Elena squeezed her eyes shut, a shudder passing through her frame. ""I thought I was losing my mind,"" she whispered, her voice cracking. ""I kept finding my signature on contracts I had no memory of reading. I thought the grief from losing Nicholas was causing a nervous breakdown. Nathan was always there... bringing me tea, telling me to rest, telling me he would take care of everything.""

""He was manufacturing your breakdown,"" Matteo said, walking over and placing a cup of fresh, unadulterated ginger tea on the table before her. ""He needed you legally incompetent before the anniversary of Nicholas's death, or your husband's trust would have permanently transferred full voting control of Harper Shipping directly to Lucy.""

Elena looked up at Matteo, studying the sharp, aristocratic contours of his face. ""Why did you help us? Nathan told me you were a ruthless mobster. He said you were a criminal who would destroy our company if we didn't agree to his logistics partnership.""

Matteo leaned against the arm of a leather chair, his dark eyes steady. ""I am not a saint, Elena. My family has operated in the shadows for three generations. But my father raised me with a code. We fight men who choose to step into the ring. We do not drug women, we do not murder husbands in their beds, and we do not steal from little girls who hide behind armchairs to protect their mothers.""

A faint, grateful smile touched Elena's lips for the first time in months. ""Lucy knew. Out of everyone in that house, my five-year-old daughter was the only one who saw through him.""

""Children see the truth before adults learn to rationalize lies,"" Matteo said quietly.

The library door clicked open, and Marco walked in, his expression grim. He nodded toward Matteo, signaling a private conversation. Matteo stepped out into the grand hallway, closing the heavy oak doors behind him.

""What is it?"" Matteo asked.

""Dominic Russo didn't flee the state,"" Marco said quietly. ""Our contacts at the port report that Russo has pulled thirty of his best enforcers into his private terminal on the Cooper River. He knows Whitmore is in federal custody, and he knows Whitmore’s testimony will bury him under RICO charges. Russo is going to try to scrub the evidence before morning.""

""The evidence?""

""Nicholas Harper kept a set of duplicate shipping ledgers,"" Marco explained. ""Before he died, he suspected Whitmore was using Harper Shipping containers to smuggle weapons for Russo. Nicholas hid the encrypted hard drive containing the manifest numbers inside the old Harper drydock warehouse at Pier 4. Russo's men are tearing that building apart right now trying to find it.""

Matteo looked down at his watch. It was past eight in the evening. The tides were rising along the Charleston harbor.

""If Russo finds that drive, he burns it, and Nathan’s lawyers can claim the wedding recordings were fabricated by a competitor,"" Matteo reasoned.

""Exactly,"" Marco agreed. ""Without those physical manifests, Whitmore’s legal team will have him out on bail by Tuesday, and Elena will spend the next five years tied up in court fighting for custody of her own daughter.""

Matteo turned his gaze toward the closed library door, thinking of the little girl with the daisied dress and the promise he had sealed with his pinky finger.

""Assemble the team,"" Matteo commanded softly. ""We're going to Pier 4.""
