Chapter 7 - Erasing the Poison

By dawn, the sprawling Moretti estate was bathed in pale, crisp autumn sunlight. The fog had lifted, revealing the vibrant golds and crimsons of the manicured maple trees lining the drive. But inside the mansion, an army of professional cleaners and decorators was already hard at work under Dante's strict supervision.

Every piece of furniture, every silk drape, and every painting that Vanessa had brought into the house was being carried out the front doors and loaded into disposal trucks.

I stood on the mezzanine balcony, watching as two workers hauled away the massive marble dining table—the table beneath which my little girl had spent the darkest hours of her young life.

""Where is it going, Boss?"" Dante asked, walking up the staircase holding a clipboard.

""To the incinerator,"" I answered without hesitation. ""Every inch of it. I want the entire dining wing stripped down to the studs. Redesign it with warm oak, soft lighting, and oversized chairs. Nothing cold. Nothing intimidating.""

""And the woman?""

""Vanessa has been escorted to the airport with a one-way ticket to a remote town in the Midwest,"" Dante reported. ""Her bank accounts have been frozen, her credit cards canceled, and her family has been informed of her treachery. She won't dare show her face in this state again.""

""And Matteo?""

Dante paused, his jaw tightening slightly. ""He's on a cargo vessel bound for a remote mining operation in South America. He'll spend the next twenty years earning his bread with his hands in the dirt. No phone, no family, no power.""

""Good.""

I walked down the long corridor toward Sophie's bedroom wing. When I opened the door to her nursery, I found Margaret sitting in a rocking chair, softly reading The Velveteen Rabbit.

Sophie was sitting on the floor, but not beneath furniture—she was surrounded by a mountain of plush animals, happily brushing the mane of a giant stuffed unicorn. When she heard my footsteps, her face lit up with an incandescent smile that chased away every dark shadow lingering in my soul.

""Daddy!"" she squealed, leaping up and running toward me at full speed.

This time, she didn't stop two feet away. She didn't look over her shoulder for permission. She launched her tiny body straight into my arms, wrapping her arms tightly around my neck and burying her face in my shoulder.

""Good morning, my princess,"" I whispered, holding her so close I could feel the steady, joyful thump of her heartbeat against mine. ""Did you sleep well?""

""Uh-huh! Miss Margaret made pancakes with chocolate chips! And she said today we get to paint my room pink!""

""Any color you want, sweetheart,"" I laughed, kissing both of her soft cheeks. ""Pink, purple, gold... whatever the princess decrees.""

Margaret stood up, smiling warmly as she gathered her coat. ""She's resilient, Lorenzo. Children are stronger than we think, but she needs to know she is safe. She needs structure, love, and people who will never make her feel small.""

May you like

""I promise you, Margaret, she will have all of that,"" I said. ""And starting Monday, I'd like to make you the full-time director of Sophie's private education and head of the household staff. If you'll have the position.""

Margaret blinked, surprised, then a soft, graceful smile touched her eyes. ""It would be an honor, Don Lorenzo.""
