Chapter 6 - Ambush at Slip 42

The midnight fog rolled thick and heavy off the Long Island Sound, cloaking the private docks of Montauk in a freezing, salty mist. At the end of the wooden pier, the eighty-foot luxury yacht The Sovereign rocked gently against its moorings, its diesel engines idling with a low, rhythmic rumble.
A sleek black Mercedes pulled up to the security gate of the pier, its headlights slicing through the gloom. Inside sat two of my men in the front seats, with Matteo bound and gagged between them in the back, disguised in his regular winter coat.
From the deck of the yacht, three armed guards watched through binoculars. A tall, silver-haired man in a tailored cashmere trench coat stepped out of the heated cabin onto the teak deck. Victor Sterling.
Sterling checked his gold wristwatch, an arrogant smirk playing on his thin lips as the car approached the gangway.
""Right on time, Matteo,"" Sterling called out as the rear door of the Mercedes swung open. ""I assume the package is secured? My buyers in Geneva are waiting for confirmation.""
Instead of Matteo stepping out, Dante emerged into the yellow pier light, his hands resting easily on his tactical belt.
""Package was canceled, Victor,"" Dante shouted back over the groan of the tide.
Sterling’s smirk vanished in an instant. ""Who the hell are you? Where is Matteo?""
From the shadows behind the dock master's shack, ten of my men moved forward, surrounding the gangway with tactical precision. At the same time, two blacked-out Zodiac speedboats cut through the water from either side of the yacht, boarding ramps already positioned.
I stepped out from behind Dante, walking down the center of the wooden dock, the mist swirling around my long wool coat.
""Looking for this?"" I asked, tossing Matteo’s cracked silver lion ring onto the deck of the yacht. It clattered loudly against the fiberglass before coming to rest at Sterling’s expensive shoes.
Sterling took a half-step back, his bodyguard immediately reaching beneath his jacket.
A single muffled crack echoed across the harbor. The bodyguard crumpled to the deck, clutching his shoulder as Dante lowered his suppressed sidearm.
""Don't do anything stupid, Victor,"" I said calmly, stepping onto the gangway and climbing aboard The Sovereign. ""Your crew is outgunned, your coast guard escort was diverted three hours ago by federal agents investigating your dummy corporations, and the council just sanctioned your entire shipping fleet.""
Sterling swallowed hard, his aristocratic composure cracking under the weight of sheer panic. ""Lorenzo... listen to me. This was business. Matteo approached me! He told me you were stepping down voluntarily and needed Sophie placed in a private academy abroad for her own safety! I didn't know—""
""You knew exactly what you were doing,"" I cut him off, stopping inches from his face. ""You wanted leverage over my port authority. You thought if you had my daughter, I’d sign over the eastern seaboard.""
""What do you want?"" Sterling gasped, his voice cracking. ""Money? Territory? Name your price.""
""I don't want your money, Victor. I want you off my coast. By sunrise, your ships will vacate New York waters, your assets in the harbor will be transferred to the Moretti trust, and if you or any of your associates ever look in the direction of my family again, I won't send an envoy. I will come myself.""
May you like
Sterling nodded frantically, his hands raised in complete submission. ""Done. It's done. I swear it on my life.""
""Good,"" I said, turning my back on him. ""Get off my docks.""
