Chapter 2 - The Shadow In The Doorway

A sudden hush swept through Maison Valmont like a cold draft blowing out every candle.

Even Denise Dupont straightened her posture instantly, her trained eye recognizing the bespoke tailoring of the security detail. Behind the two men walked a tall, broad-shouldered figure in a charcoal wool trench coat and polished Oxford shoes.

It was Julian Sterling.

At thirty-four, Julian controlled Sterling Global Logistics, maritime fleets, and premier Manhattan commercial properties.

He rarely appeared on television, but his name alone caused hedge fund managers to hold their breath during closed auctions. His chiseled jaw was tight, his dark eyes surveying the room with terrifying precision.

Vanessa’s jaw dropped, her irritation transforming instantly into predatory charm.

"Mr. Sterling," Vanessa purred, rushing forward on her high heels while smoothing down her designer pencil skirt.

"Welcome to Maison Valmont. What an absolute honor to have you visit our humble flagship."

Julian didn't look at Vanessa; he didn't even acknowledge the hand she extended in greeting.

He walked straight past her, his heavy steps steady against the marble floor, stopping right in front of Naomi.

"You're late," Naomi whispered, looking up at him with a faint, wry smile.

"Traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge was backed up," Julian replied, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that resonated through the quiet room.

He reached out his hand, tucking a loose strand of hair behind Naomi’s ear with intimate, unhurried tenderness.

"Did they show you the dress?" Julian asked, his thumb lightly resting against her cheek.

Vanessa stepped between them, her eyes darting between Julian and Naomi in absolute disbelief and growing panic.

"Mr. Sterling! You shouldn't associate with this girl. She was just trespassing in our private VIP salon."

Julian turned his head toward Vanessa, his gaze dropping to sub-zero temperatures.

"She is not trespassing. She is my fiancée."
