Chapter 8 - The Price Of Loyalty

Vincent did not snap Frank’s neck, though the raw physical power vibrating through his arm made it clear he could have crushed the man’s windpipe in half a heartbeat. Instead, he pulled Frank forward and threw him down onto the cold floor of the hangar, where the older man curled into a ball, coughing violently and clutching his bruised throat.
""Noah,"" Vincent said without looking back.
""Boss.""
""Take Mr. Russo's phone. Call Special Agent Marcus Vance at the Federal Building.""
Frank froze, lifting his head from the floor in absolute horror. ""The Feds? Vincent, are you insane? You're a Vale! We handle our business in the dark! If you bring the federal prosecutors into this, the whole house comes down!""
Vincent knelt beside his uncle, leaning down so his words were for Frank alone. ""The house will stand, Frank. Because the only files Agent Vance is receiving are the private Cayman accounts registered in your name, the forged lease agreements with Dean Miller, and twenty years of systematic tax fraud you ran behind my father's back. The Vale logistics network has legitimate contracts. You are the only criminal on this runway.""
Noah held out his phone on speaker. A crisp, authoritative voice boomed through the speakerphone. ""Vance here.""
""Agent Vance,"" Noah said smoothly. ""This is a courtesy notification. Frank Russo is currently lying on the floor of Hangar 14 at Northeast Airport with four million dollars in illicit offshore bearer bonds, three forged passports, and twenty years of personal tax embezzlement files. His charter pilot has been grounded. If your task force arrives within fifteen minutes, you can arrest him without firing a single bullet.""
There was a heavy pause on the line, followed by the sound of sirens blaring in the background. ""We're four minutes away, Reed. Don't let him leave the building.""
Noah hung up.
Dean Miller began weeping openly, dropping to his knees. ""Mr. Vale, please! You said if I followed the script I would just get prison time! Don't let them put me in federal lockup with Russo's crew!""
""Dean,"" Evelyn said, stepping forward. Her voice was steady, calm, and utterly devoid of pity. ""You told me poor girls survive longer when they don't ask questions. You're about to spend the rest of your life answering questions from federal investigators. I suggest you answer every single one.""
Dominic and two operatives dragged Dean and Frank toward the hangar office, locking them inside until the wailing sirens of federal law enforcement echoed across the runway tarmac. Six black SUVs swept through the gates, their red and blue strobe lights painting the wet pavement in vibrant streaks of justice.
Special Agent Vance, a weathered man in a trench coat, walked into the hangar with a team of armed federal agents. He exchanged a curt, professional nod with Vincent. No words were needed. The Pelican case, the ledgers, and the two conspirators were handed over into federal custody with absolute precision.
As Frank was led away in handcuffs, his expensive coat dragging in the wet grease of the runway, he turned back one last time, screaming profanities at Vincent and Evelyn until an agent shoved him into the back of an armored transport.
The hangar fell quiet again, save for the patter of rain against the high metal roof.
Vincent walked over to Evelyn. He looked down at her hands, which were still trembling slightly from the adrenaline of the confrontation. Reaching out, he gently unclasped the heavy master ledger from her arms and handed it to Noah.
""It's over, Evelyn,"" Vincent said softly. ""The debt is erased. The men who hurt you will never see the light of day again.""
Evelyn looked around the vast, empty hangar, feeling the weight of the last twenty-four hours finally crash down upon her shoulders. The fear, the icy water, the desperate struggle to keep her sister alive—all of it dissolved into the quiet hum of the morning.
""What happens to Lily and me now?"" she asked, her voice small and vulnerable. ""The grocery store is ruined. My apartment was in the basement zone. We don't have a home to go back to.""
May you like
Vincent offered his arm to her, a gesture of old-world courtliness that looked entirely natural on him.
""You have a home in Chestnut Hill for as long as you need it,"" he replied. ""And Lily has an appointment at Johns Hopkins tomorrow morning. Let's go bring your sister the good news.""
