Chapter 6 - A Sister's Collateral

The rain resumed as a steady, gray mist as the caravan pulled out of Kensington, moving northwest toward Northeast Philadelphia Airport. Dean sat terrified in the back of an unmarked van flanked by two of Vincent's enforcers, his broken wrist crudely splinted with cardboard and duct tape. In the black town car behind them, Evelyn held the master ledger against her lap, turning the pages with disbelief.
""My father's trust wasn't just four hundred thousand dollars,"" she murmured, tracing a line of neat bookkeeping from seven years prior. ""The initial deposit from your father was two million dollars. It was invested in city municipal bonds.""
Vincent looked out the window at the passing industrial parks. ""My father was ruthless in business, Evelyn, but he understood balance. He knew that taking control of the docks meant disrupting hundreds of working-class families. Anthony was the heart of that union. My father wanted to ensure that when Anthony’s body broke down from forty years of turning wrenches, his family would be treated like royalty.""
""We lived on generic canned beans for two years after he died,"" Evelyn said, a bitter edge cutting through her sadness. ""Lily had to drop out of community college because we couldn't afford bus fare and textbooks. I worked seventy hours a week at three different minimum-wage jobs while Frank Russo was drinking single malt whiskey on a yacht bought with my father's blood.""
""That ends today,"" Vincent said.
""What happens to Frank?"" she asked, looking directly into his eyes. ""He’s your family. Your father's brother-in-law.""
Vincent's face hardened into stone. ""A man who steals from his syndicate is a thief. A man who steals from orphans using the name of his dead brother is vermin. Family is a bond of honor, Evelyn, not an excuse for betrayal.""
His phone buzzed on the console between them. Vincent tapped the speakerphone button. ""Report.""
It was the team leader stationed at Franklin Renal Center. ""Mr. Vale, we have a situation at the hospital. A transport ambulance arrived ten minutes ago claiming to have transfer orders from the state medical board to move Lily Ward to an auxiliary facility in Camden. They had forged state paperwork and private security credentials.""
Evelyn gasped, clutching Vincent's arm in blind panic. ""Lily! They're taking her!""
""Where are the men now?"" Vincent asked, his voice dead calm, though the air inside the car dropped ten degrees.
""Detained in the fourth-floor utility corridor,"" the team leader replied smoothly. ""Our men intercepted them before they crossed the threshold into room 412. They were armed with suppressed handguns and private transport restraints. They are currently unconscious and locked in the maintenance room. Lily is safe and unaware of the disturbance.""
Evelyn slumped back against the leather seat, letting out a ragged sob of relief. Her fingers remained tangled in Vincent’s sleeve, and this time, he gently turned his wrist, clasping her trembling hand in his warm, steady grip.
""Frank knew Dean was sloppy,"" Vincent said to Noah. ""He sent an extraction team to take the sister as insurance in case the flood didn't drown Evelyn or the police found the basement. He wanted a hostage to guarantee his safe departure from the city.""
""The hangar is ten minutes away, boss,"" Noah said, checking the rearview mirror. ""Dominic has already positioned four vehicles around the perimeter of Runway 3. The private charter Gulfstream has its engines running. Frank is already inside the administrative office waiting for Dean's delivery.""
""Tell Dominic not to move until we enter the gate,"" Vincent instructed. ""I want Frank to see the ledger in my hands before he realizes the sky has fallen.""
Vincent turned back to Evelyn. His thumb traced a gentle, comforting circle over the gauze wrapping her wrist. ""You don't have to come inside, Evelyn. You've been through enough violence for a lifetime. Wait in the car with Noah.""
Evelyn pulled her hand away, sitting up straight, her eyes blazing with a fierce, unbreakable resolve. ""He chained me to a shelf to drown like an animal. He tried to take my sister out of her hospital bed. I am walking into that hangar with you, Vincent. I want him to look me in the eye when he realizes his money is gone.""

Vincent stared at her for a long, quiet moment, a subtle glimmer of respect softening his intense gaze.
""Alright,"" he said quietly. ""Then stand beside me.""
