Chapter 7 - The Confrontation At The Docks

Hangar 14 at Northeast Philadelphia Airport was a cavernous structure of corrugated steel and polished concrete, smelling of jet fuel, ozone, and cold rain. Inside, a gleaming white Gulfstream IV sat with its cabin door lowered and its auxiliary power unit whining with a high-pitched drone.

Near the portable boarding stairs stood Frank Russo, draped in a luxurious camel-hair coat, his silver hair neatly styled, clutching a leather briefcase. Two private bodyguards in tactical windbreakers flanked him, scanning the runway with nervous vigilance.

The side pedestrian door groaned open. Dean Miller stumbled inside, clutching his splinted arm, his face covered in dried blood and sweat. He was carrying the black Pelican case awkwardly in his good hand.

""Frank!"" Dean yelled, his voice echoing off the metal rafters. ""I got it! I got the books!""

Frank let out a sigh of relief, stepping forward with an irritated scowl. ""What the hell happened to your arm, Dean? And why are you two hours late? The tower gave us a departure slot thirty minutes ago!""

""The water... the basement flooded to the ceiling,"" Dean stammered, his eyes darting wildly toward the shadows behind him. ""I had to pry the foundation hatch with a crowbar. But it's all here. The girl is gone. She didn't make it out.""

Frank smiled, a cold, self-satisfied smirk that exposed decades of unchecked greed. ""A tragic neighborhood casualty of an unprecedented weather event. Tragic, really. Hand over the case and get in the van. There’s fifty grand in the glove compartment for your trouble. Get out of the state for a year.""

Dean didn't move. He stood frozen on the concrete floor, his knees trembling.

""Dean?"" Frank snapped, his eyes narrowing with sudden suspicion. ""I said give me the case.""

""He can't give it to you, Frank,"" a deep, commanding voice sliced through the whine of the jet engines. ""Because it isn't his property. And it certainly isn't yours.""

From the dark entrance of the hangar, Vincent Vale stepped into the fluorescent light. He walked with measured, unhurried steps, his charcoal coat open, hands resting casually at his sides. Flanking him on his left was Noah, and on his right walked Evelyn Ward, holding the master ledger against her chest like an indictment.

Frank’s bodyguards reached instinctively for their holsters, but before their hands could touch their weapons, the loud, synchronized clicks of a dozen assault rifles echoed from the elevated catwalks above. Dominic and eight heavily armed security operatives leaned over the railings, red laser sights painting glowing dots across the chests of Frank's men.

""Drop the iron,"" Noah barked from below. ""Now.""

The two bodyguards took one look at the laser points dancing on their jackets, unbuckled their holstered sidearms with two fingers, and let them clatter against the concrete before taking three steps back with their hands raised.

Frank Russo stood alone in the center of the hangar, the color draining from his tanned face until he looked as gray as the storm clouds outside. His briefcase slipped from his numb fingers, landing with a heavy thud between his polished Italian shoes.

""Vincent..."" Frank stammered, raising his hands in a frantic gesture of peace. ""Vincent, my boy... thank God you're here. Dean went rogue! He stole the company records! I set up this charter to track down the stolen assets before they left the country!""

Vincent stopped ten feet from his uncle, his expression completely devoid of emotion. ""You set up a private flight to the Bahamas with four million dollars in bearer bonds and a secondary hit squad sent to kidnap a dying girl from a renal clinic. Is that how you protect the family assets, Frank?""

""It's a misunderstanding!"" Frank plead, his voice cracking into a desperate shriek. ""I built this empire with your father! Thirty years I broke my back for the Vale name! You can't believe this... this gutter girl over your own blood!""

""Her name is Evelyn Ward,"" Vincent said, his voice dropping into a register that made the entire room feel fragile. ""Her father was Anthony Ward. The only man my father ever trusted to keep his word without a signed contract. And you left his daughter chained in four feet of filthy floodwater so you could steal her sister's medicine money.""

Frank looked at Evelyn, his eyes bulging with frantic malice. ""You stupid little bitch... you should have drowned in that basement!""

Before Frank could finish his sentence, Vincent moved.

His hand clamped around Frank's throat like a hydraulic vise, lifting the older man onto his tiptoes and driving him backward against the fuselage of the Gulfstream. The metal skin of the aircraft dented with a sharp boom. Frank clawed frantically at Vincent's iron grip, his feet dangling six inches above the floor, gasping for air as his eyes rolled back in terror.

""You took my father's seal,"" Vincent whispered, every word carved from pure ice. ""You used my name to extort the poor. You brought shame to everything my family spent half a century building. You are not blood, Frank. You are a cancer.""
