Chapter 4 - The Black Lab

The escape tunnel emptied out into a forgotten storm canal two miles downriver from my estate. The November wind was brutal, whipping freezing drizzle against our faces as we climbed up the embankment. Theo walked without a single complaint, clutching the shivering puppy beneath his jacket, while I carried Lily piggyback, her arms wrapped tightly around my neck.
I had an off-grid safe house hidden beneath an abandoned auto-body shop in the industrial district of South Brooklyn. It was a concrete bunker equipped with independent power generators, satellite communications, rations, and an armory capable of equipping a platoon. By dawn, we were inside, the reinforced blast door locked from within.
I wrapped Lily in a thick wool blanket and set a hot mug of cocoa before her. She was exhausted, her eyes drooping until she finally curled up on the leather sofa and fell into a deep, dreamless sleep, Cookie curled beside her feet like a loyal guardian.
Theo, however, did not sit. He wandered over to the workbench where my multi-screen tactical terminal was humming. Without asking, he pulled a rolling stool over, climbed onto it, and began typing on the keyboard. His fingers moved in an ethereal blur, striking keys with inhuman speed.
"Theo," I said gently, placing a hand on his small shoulder. "What are you doing?"
"Accessing Prometheus Vanguard's internal intranet," he replied, not breaking his cadence. Lines of encrypted green code streamed across the monitors, reflecting in his pale pupils. "They don't use conventional firewalls. They use dynamic quantum keys. I designed the architecture."
My jaw tightened. "You designed it?"
"I didn't choose to," he murmured softly, his tiny fingers trembling slightly as he typed. "They put electrodes on my temples when I was three. Dr. Vance said I had an eidetic hyper-computational anomaly. He said my brain was an evolutionary glitch that belonged to the government. They kept me in a white room with no windows. No bed. Just a glass desk and a screen. If I failed a math test, they lowered the temperature until my toes turned blue."
A cold, murderous rage ignited in my chest, burning hotter than anything I had ever felt in my life. I had executed ruthless men for breaking business agreements, but the thought of cold-blooded scientists torturing a toddler for computational algorithms made my blood boil with righteous fury.
"Why did you run away, Theo?" I asked softly.
"I found Cookie," he whispered, looking down at his small hands. "He fell into the basement intake grate outside the compound. He was wet and crying. They ordered me to throw him in the incinerator to test my emotional detachment quotient. I couldn't do it. So I hid him in a bread cart and squeezed through the garbage chute."
He hit the enter key with a resounding click. The monitor flashed, displaying a top-secret dossier bearing a corporate logo: a stylized torch burning inside a triangle.
"Prometheus Vanguard: Black Site Sigma," Theo read aloud. "Location: Upstate New York, disguised as an environmental research facility. In charge: Dr. Sterling Vance."
A high-resolution photograph appeared on the screen. A tall, gaunt man in his late fifties with slicked-back silver hair and rimless spectacles, dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit. Beneath his photo was a chilling status report:
*SUBJECT E07: ESCAPED. RECOVERY DIRECTIVE: ABSOLUTE. IF RECOVERY IMPOSSIBLE, TERMINATE TO PREVENT INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY COMPROMISE.*
"They aren't trying to bring you back to study you, are they?" I said, realizing the horrific truth.
Theo shook his head, a single tear running down his pale cheek. "They have newer subjects now. E08 and E09. If I am in the outside world, I am a liability. They are going to erase everyone who has seen my face."

I looked over at my sleeping daughter, peaceful and innocent under the wool blanket. Then I looked at Theo, whose eyes were pleading for a miracle no ordinary man could provide.
"They made a fatal mistake, Theo," I said, loading fresh magazines into my tactical vest. "They thought you escaped into an alley. They didn't realize you wandered into the kingdom of Luca Moretti."
