Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Dark

The boy under the grand piano did not stop moving his finger until the moisture dried completely against the dark hardwood floor. I remained kneeling beside him, my breathing held low and steady, calculating the weight of every breath. In my world, numbers were either dollars, shipments, or dead men. The figures Theo had traced were none of those; they formed an intricate algorithmic grid, resembling satellite coordinates layered beneath cryptographic cipher strings. When his hand finally collapsed against his knee, trembling from exhaustion, I gently slid both arms beneath his fragile torso and lifted him. He felt impossibly light, like balsa wood and bird bones, but his grip instantly locked into the lapel of my heavy robe with the desperation of someone slipping down a bottomless cliff.

"Sleep, little man," I murmured into the crown of his tangled hair as I carried him through the silent corridors of my estate. "Nobody breaches these gates. Not while I draw breath."

He didn't answer with words. Instead, his small cheek pressed against my collarbone, warm and feverish. I carried him past the family portraits, past the armed guards stationed at every reinforced archway, and laid him down in the center of the bed in the guest wing. Lily’s plush rabbit sat on the nightstand beside a glass of fresh water. I pulled the heavy duvet over his chin, watching his eyelids flutter into fitful REM sleep. His lips continued to twitch, silently mouthing sequences: zero, nine, delta, four.

Walking down the marble stairs toward my private study, my joints felt stiff with an uneasy tension I hadn’t felt in over a decade. Enzo was waiting by the wet bar, swirling amber bourbon in a lowball glass. The overhead lights were dimmed to a dull amber glow.

"You're awake late, Boss," Enzo said, his tone deceptively casual. "Trouble with the stray?"

"He isn't a stray, Enzo," I said, leaning both palms against the edge of the mahogany desk. I stared directly into the eyes of a man who had stood beside me through two mob wars, three federal indictments, and the burial of my beloved wife. "A child who solves multidimensional matrix equations at four years old doesn't just wander out of an alley with an abandoned pup. Someone engineered him. Or trained him under threat of annihilation."

Enzo offered a tight, sympathetic smile that didn't reach his eyes. "New York is full of freaks and savants, Luca. The streets swallow hundreds of them every winter. Let’s hand him over to Father Matteo's orphanage in Queens. Out of sight, out of mind. It’s cleaner that way. We don't need heat on the family right now, especially with the docks shipment coming in on Friday."

"No," I replied, my voice dropping to an icy gravel that commanded immediate obedience. "He stays under my roof. Lily loves him already. And I want to know who etched that silver tag into his flesh."

Enzo took a slow sip, his throat bobbing as he swallowed. "Understood, Boss. I'll run another sweep through the state databases."

He turned and left, closing the heavy oak double doors behind him. The moment the latch clicked shut, I pulled my burner phone from the hollowed-out spine of an antique encyclopedia. I pressed speed dial two.

Three rings passed before a hoarse, raspy voice answered from a secure relay in Geneva. "Speak."

"Viktor," I said without preamble. "I need an off-grid trace on an asset tag. High-grade surgical titanium, serial code E07, laser-etched micro-font. And I need to know which private military or black-budget research lab lost a prodigy within the last seventy-two hours."

A prolonged silence hung over the line, followed by the sound of rapid, rhythmic keystrokes. "Luca... you shouldn't have touched that boy."

"Why?"

"E07 isn't an orphan," Viktor whispered, genuine dread leaking through his seasoned voice. "He is Project Daedalus. The property of Prometheus Vanguard Corporation. They don't file missing persons reports. They deploy extermination squads."

Before I could demand more answers, the secure camera feed on my desk terminal flashed an urgent crimson alert. An encrypted perimeter sensor on the northern tree line of the estate had gone completely dark.
