Chapter 4 - The Ink Dries

The ink on the document had barely settled when Sienna handed the pen to Adrien with an affectionate giggle. ""Your turn, darling. Don't keep our guests waiting for the reception.""
Adrien didn't take the pen. He simply stepped back, clasping his hands behind his back. The warmth vanished from his posture entirely, replaced by the imposing, towering presence of a corporate chief executive preparing to terminate a corrupt division.
The chapel fell into a sudden, awkward silence. The minister looked up, confused. ""Mr. Mercer? Your signature?""
""I won't be signing the marriage license,"" Adrien said.
His voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the cavernous sanctuary like an iron bell. The string quartet stopped playing their quiet interlude. Guests in the front pews exchanged nervous whispers. Helen Mercer sat tall and still, her hands folded quietly over her silver-blue purse.
Sienna let out a nervous, breathy laugh, reaching for his arm. ""Adrien, what kind of joke is this? Everyone is watching. Sign the paper.""
Adrien avoided her touch, taking a deliberate step away from her. ""It’s no joke, Clara.""
The color instantly drained from Sienna’s face. The name hit her like a physical blow. Her hand froze in mid-air, her lips parting as her jaw went slack. ""What... what did you just call me?""
Across the chancel, Eric stiffened. His relaxed, smug posture instantly evaporated, his shoulders locking into a defensive crouch. He took a hasty step toward the altar rail. ""Adrien, man, you're having a panic attack. Let's step into the vestry and cool off—""
""Stay right where you are, Eric,"" Adrien commanded, pointing an index finger directly at him without breaking eye contact with Clara. ""Or should I say, Eric Jennings?""
A collective gasp swept through the two hundred guests. Sienna’s eyes darted frantically around the room, landing on Diane Holloway, who had picked up the leather folder and closed it with a sharp, resonant snap.
""What is the meaning of this?"" shouted an elderly man from the fourth row—one of the board members Adrien had known for twenty years. ""Adrien, what is happening here?""
Adrien turned to address the crowd, his voice resonating with unyielding authority. ""What is happening, ladies and gentlemen, is the prevention of grand larceny. Standing before you is Clara Jennings, an operative who has spent the last seven years targeting private business owners, marrying them under fraudulent identities, and siphoning their corporate treasuries into offshore dummy corporations managed by her half-brother, Eric.""
""That's a lie!"" Sienna shrieked, her sweet, breathless bridal demeanor instantly shattering into a venomous snarl. She pointed an accusatory finger at Diane. ""He’s having a nervous breakdown! He’s paranoid! His mother has poisoned his mind against me from day one because she couldn't stand losing her little boy!""
""Save your theatrics for court, Clara,"" Diane Holloway said coldly, pulling a manila folder from her briefcase. ""Ten minutes ago, you willingly signed document Form 84-B under penalty of perjury. Because Adrien had not yet signed the marriage registry, you were not executing a marital certificate. You were executing an unconditional confession and disclosure affidavit for third-party auditing, accompanied by an absolute waiver of rights against Mercer Ridge Manufacturing.""
Sienna lunged toward the table, her fingernails clawing at the folder. ""You tricked me! That’s fraud! That document is completely illegal!""
""You signed it in front of two hundred witnesses, a licensed notary public, and an ordained minister,"" Diane replied, not flinching as she pulled the papers out of reach. ""And more importantly, you confirmed your identity under oath. The moment your pen hit that paper, you authorized the Department of Justice to unseal your prior civil records in Georgia and Florida.""

Clara stood frozen in the middle of the altar, the forty-thousand-dollar veil hanging crookedly from her head. The silence in the room was suffocating. Every eye was fixed on her, stripped bare of sympathy, filled with disgust and horror.
She turned to Eric, panic bleeding through her teeth. ""Eric! Say something! Do something!""
