Chapter 3 - The Vows of Deceit

Sienna reached the altar steps, releasing her bouquet and looking up into Adrien’s eyes. Her bottom lip trembled with perfectly rehearsed emotion. ""You look handsome,"" she whispered, her voice carrying just enough vulnerability to charm the first three rows of guests.

""You look stunning, Sienna,"" Adrien replied smoothly, his voice deep and entirely composed.

The officiant, an elderly minister who had known the Mercer family for thirty years, cleared his throat and opened his leather-bound Bible. ""Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the sight of God and these witnesses to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony...""

The traditional ceremony flowed like clockwork. Sienna recited her vows with breathtaking emotion, speaking of endless loyalty, mutual sacrifice, and enduring love until death did them part. When she pledged to stand by Adrien in sickness and in health, through poverty and wealth, Adrien felt a faint smirk threaten to break his stern expression. He wondered how she managed to say the word 'poverty' without choking on her own hypocrisy.

When it came time for Adrien's vows, he didn't read from the ornate card the minister handed him. Instead, he reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a folded slip of cream paper, and unfolded it deliberately. The sanctuary grew pin-drop silent.

""Sienna,"" Adrien began, his voice ringing clearly off the chapel rafters. ""Fourteen years ago, I started Mercer Ridge in a leaky garage with five men who trusted me with their livelihoods. I learned very early on that trust is the only real currency in this world. Money comes and goes. Buildings can burn. But when a man gives his word, it has to be absolute.""

Sienna smiled radiantly, believing his speech was merely an eccentric, romantic tribute to his work ethic.

""I promised to share everything I own with my partner in life,"" Adrien continued, locking his eyes directly onto hers. ""Every asset. Every debt. Every consequence of every signature we make. Today, I intend to keep that promise down to the very last letter of the law. What is mine will protect what is ours, and what is hidden will inevitably come to the light.""

A slight flicker of uncertainty crossed Sienna's eyes, quickly smoothed away by her practiced grace. ""Always, my love,"" she whispered.

""The rings, please,"" the minister instructed.

Eric stepped forward with a broad grin, fishing the platinum bands from his pocket and presenting them on a velvet pillow. ""Here you go, brother. Don't lose them.""

Adrien took the band designed for Sienna. As he slid the cold metal onto her finger, he held her hand just a fraction tighter than necessary, his thumb brushing her pulse point. It was beating fast, elevated by adrenaline and greed. ""A binding contract,"" Adrien murmured under his breath, leaning down to kiss her cheek.

""Now,"" the minister announced with a warm smile, turning toward the small ceremonial table behind the pulpit. ""Before I pronounce this union to the congregation, our state requires the ceremonial and legal execution of the marriage registry and reciprocal covenant covenants. If the bride and groom will step forward.""

Usually, couples completed these formal documents in the vestry after the service. But Adrien had specially requested the legal registry table be placed front and center, illuminated beneath the stained-glass cross for all two hundred guests to witness.

Diane Holloway stood beside the table, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit instead of wedding attire. She placed a pristine leather folder stamped with gold leaf directly before Sienna.

""We do things thoroughly in the Mercer family,"" Adrien said pleasantly, guiding Sienna by the elbow toward the desk. ""Our family tradition requires signing the full reciprocal estate endowment immediately alongside the registry. It unifies our legal status instantly, ensuring full access from this very second.""

Sienna’s eyes flared with hidden delight. 'Full access.' The exact words she had been waiting months to hear. She looked over her shoulder at Eric, who gave her a discreet nod of approval.

Diane turned the parchment page, keeping her fingers firmly over the small-print disclosure paragraphs while exposing only the signature lines marked with bright yellow flags. ""Sign here, Mrs. Mercer. Then initial the third annex authorizing immediate reciprocal financial disclosure.""

Sienna didn't hesitate. She picked up the heavy gold fountain pen, flashed a dazzling smile for the wedding photographer whose flash popped nearby, and scrawled her name with sweeping, eager flourish.
