Chapter 8 - The Bunker in the Berkshires

The estate in the Berkshires was not merely a house; it was a modern, impregnable sanctuary surrounded by two hundred acres of dense pine forest and secured behind an eight-foot wrought-iron perimeter wall lined with motion sensors and thermal cameras.

By the time the convoy arrived in the dead of night, Eli had fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep, completely stabilized by Dr. Mercer’s emergency medication and the quiet hum of the luxury transport. Mason, however, was in agonizing pain. His left shoulder was severely dislocated, and two of his ribs were cracked from the impact of the iron pipe.

Inside the estate's private medical wing, Dr. Mercer carefully popped Mason’s shoulder back into its socket with a sharp, sickening click. Mason gripped the edges of the examination table, his knuckles turning chalk-white, beads of cold sweat running down his temple, but he refused to take a narcotic sedative.

""I need to stay sharp,"" Mason grunted, waving the syringe away as the doctor tightly bound his chest with medical compression wraps. ""Drake is desperate. Desperate men make fatal mistakes, but they also take irrational risks.""

Hannah stood quietly in the doorway, watching the doctor bandage the man she had spent three years trying to forget. She saw the fresh, ugly purple bruises spreading across his torso, sitting alongside old scars from a life he had tried so hard to leave behind. She walked over, taking a damp cloth from the tray, and gently wiped the sweat and road dust from Mason’s brow.

Mason looked up, his breathing shallow from the cracked ribs, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath hitch.

""You took a pipe to the shoulder for us,"" Hannah whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. ""You could have run. You could have used your guards as human shields. Why did you jump in front of that weapon?""

""Because you and Eli are the only things in this miserable world that ever mattered to me, Hannah,"" Mason said, his voice raw, honest, and completely stripped of pride. ""When you left three years ago, I thought my life was over. I built companies, I made hundreds of millions, I signed merger agreements with families like the Harts... all because I was trying to fill a hole in my chest that you left behind. I was an arrogant fool. I thought power could protect people, but all it did was paint a target on your back.""

Hannah closed her eyes, hot tears slipping down her cheeks. ""I was so scared, Mason. I was so alone in that hospital when the doctors told me Eli had pneumonia. I had twenty dollars left in my checking account. I was terrified they would kick us out into the street. And then you walked in...""

May you like

""I'm never letting you be alone again,"" Mason promised, raising his uninjured hand to gently cup her cheek, his thumb catching her tears. ""I will burn every dock in Boston, I will bankrupt the Hart family, and I will put Julian Drake in a cage before I let anyone threaten our family again.""

Suddenly, Marcus appeared at the door, holding a secure satellite tablet. ""Boss, Drake just made his move. He didn't come to the Berkshires. He took over your central shipping hub at Pier 42 in Boston Harbor. He has Richard Hart with him, and they are threatening to detonate the fuel depots unless you surrender yourself alone.""
