Chapter 4 - The Transfer

Dr. Charles Mercer arrived less than ten minutes later, breathless and still adjusting his lab coat. He didn't ask questions about the drama that had just unfolded in the hallway; when the most powerful shipping magnate in Massachusetts calls your private number, you simply do your job.

Within an hour, Eli was gently transferred from the dreary room on the fifth floor up to the elite private penthouse suite on the ninth floor. The room felt more like a luxury hotel than a hospital: panoramic glass windows overlooking the glittering, rain-slicked Boston skyline, plush leather armchairs, a private bathroom with heated marble floors, and an advanced, silent respiratory monitoring system that hummed like a quiet lullaby.

Dr. Mercer adjusted Eli's intravenous antibiotics and listened to his lungs with a warmed stethoscope. ""His oxygen saturation is already stabilizing with this specialized broad-spectrum treatment, Mr. Cole,"" the doctor said respectfully. ""The infection is aggressive, but because we caught it before it settled into the lower pleural cavity, he should make a full recovery within three to four days.""

Hannah sat in a soft armchair beside the bed, holding Eli’s small hand while the boy slept soundly, his breathing noticeably easier. The dark purple rings beneath Hannah's eyes told a story of weeks of sleepless nights, skipping meals, and carrying the unbearable weight of single motherhood on an empty stomach.

Mason watched her from the shadows near the window. He had taken off his suit jacket, rolling up the sleeves of his crisp white shirt to expose his forearms. On his left wrist, a faint scar remained—a grim reminder of the street fights of his youth, the very world Hannah had fled to escape.

""You look like you haven't eaten in two days,"" Mason said softly, breaking the long silence.

""I had a roll from the cafeteria this morning,"" Hannah muttered, not looking up from Eli’s sleeping face.

Mason tapped his phone, sending a quick text. Within twenty minutes, a hospital hospitality worker wheeled in a silver cart laden with roasted chicken, fresh vegetables, warm soup, artisan bread, and fresh fruit.

""Eat,"" Mason instructed gently, setting a bowl of hot soup on the side table next to her. ""If you collapse from exhaustion, who is going to hold his hand?""

Hannah hesitated, her stomach betraying her with a quiet, audible growl. Slowly, reluctantly, she picked up the silver spoon and took a bite. The warmth of the food seemed to break whatever brittle armor she had been holding together. She bowed her head, weeping silently into her hands as she chewed, the sheer relief of a hot meal overwhelming her battered senses.

""Why didn't you cash the checks, Hannah?"" Mason asked, his voice raw with genuine pain. ""When you left, my lawyers set up an offshore trust in your name. Two million dollars. A deed to a brownstone in Vermont. You never touched an account. You never claimed a single dollar. Why would you force yourself to work at a bakery for minimum wage when you had my fortune at your disposal?""

""Because your money has ghosts attached to it, Mason!"" Hannah whispered fiercely, wiping her eyes with the back of her sleeve. ""Every dollar you made in the beginning came from fear, from territory wars, from people who wanted revenge! If I took your money, you would have found me within twenty-four hours through banking records. And worse... your enemies would have found me too.""

Mason looked down at his shoes. She wasn't wrong. Three years ago, he had been ruthless, reckless, constantly expanding his territory, believing that sheer power was the only way to guarantee security. He had created an empire of glass and steel, but he had filled it with paranoia.

""I changed things, Hannah,"" Mason said quietly. ""After you left... the house felt like a tomb. I didn't care about the wars anymore. Over the last two years, I liquidated the illegal fronts. I bought legitimate shipping lanes, logistics hubs, renewable energy infrastructure. The security outside my home now is just private bodyguards, not soldiers. I tried to become the man you wanted me to be... but you were already gone.""

Hannah looked up, her breath catching in her throat as she saw the sheer vulnerability in his dark gray eyes. For the first time, she saw the guilt that had been eating him alive from the inside out.

Suddenly, Eli stirred on the bed. His little eyes fluttered open, looking around the massive, warm room. ""Mommy? Is the castle ours?""

Mason smiled, a genuine, warm smile that transformed his stern features. ""It's yours for as long as you need it, buddy.""
