Chapter 7 - The Ambush in the Dark

The concrete service stairwell was freezing and illuminated only by the faint, eerie glow of red emergency exit signs. Marcus led the way, descending the stairs with his weapon raised, sweeping every landing with lethal military precision. Mason followed directly behind, carrying Eli securely in his left arm while holding Hannah’s hand in a vice grip with his right. Eli’s small arms were wrapped around Mason’s neck, his face buried deep into his father’s chest, sobbing quietly into the crisp fabric of his shirt.

""Hold on to me, Eli,"" Mason whispered, his voice steady as iron despite the chaos echoing through the concrete stairwell. ""Daddy has you. Nobody is going to hurt you.""

The word slipped out naturally, without hesitation, striking Hannah’s heart like a bolt of lightning. In the middle of an armed nightmare, Mason had claimed the title he had been denied for three years, and he was carrying the boy as if he would tear through steel walls to protect him.

As they reached the basement sub-level, the heavy steel fire door swung open with a violent crash.

Two men dressed in black tactical jackets burst onto the landing, their faces obscured by dark balaclavas. The lead man raised a suppressed automatic pistol, aiming directly at Marcus.

""Down!"" Marcus yelled, firing two rapid shots that echoed like thunderclaps in the enclosed stairwell. The lead assailant collapsed against the railing, but the second attacker lunged forward, tackling Marcus to the concrete floor, sending both men tumbling down the metal stairs into the dark utility corridor.

Hannah screamed as a third man appeared from the corridor shadows, wielding a heavy iron pipe. He lunged directly toward Hannah, aiming to incapacitate her and grab the child.

Mason didn't hesitate. With an explosive surge of adrenaline, he shielded Hannah and Eli behind his back, stepping directly into the attacker's path. The iron pipe came down with sickening force, catching Mason squarely across his left shoulder.

A sharp crack echoed in the corridor. Pain exploded through Mason's collarbone, a white-hot agony that would have brought an ordinary man to his knees. But Mason didn't even grunt. Driven by pure, unadulterated paternal instinct, Mason grabbed the attacker's wrist with his uninjured hand, twisting the joint until bone splintered, driving his knee violently into the man's solar plexus. The attacker collapsed instantly, gasping for air on the bloody floor.

""Move! Go to the ambulance dock!"" Mason ordered through gritted teeth, ignoring the agonizing numbness creeping down his left arm. He scooped Eli back up, his face pale with pain, and ushered Hannah through the double doors.

They burst into the subterranean loading dock. A reinforced, armored black transport van was idling near the loading ramp, its headlights cutting through the subterranean exhaust fumes. Two of Mason’s trusted security guards stood by the open sliding door, laying down suppressive cover fire toward the facility gate where Julian Drake’s scout vehicles were attempting to breach the perimeter.

""Get in! Get in now!"" Dr. Mercer shouted from inside the van, holding the mobile oxygen line ready.

Hannah leaped inside, pulling Eli into her arms as the doctor immediately connected the boy’s nasal cannula to the vehicle’s high-flow medical regulator. Mason scrambled in behind them, slamming the heavy reinforced sliding door shut just as three bullets pinged harmlessly against the bulletproof ballistic steel.

""Hit the gas!"" Marcus shouted from the front passenger seat, blood dripping from a cut above his eyebrow.

The heavy tires screeched against the concrete, the armored van rocketing up the ramp, smashing through the facility's wooden gate and barreling out into the rainy Boston streets, leaving the chaos behind them in the rearview mirror.
