Chapter 9 - The Ghost From The Past

Before Adam could answer, his phone buzzed violently on the desk. It was an urgent call from downtown security dispatch.
“Mr. Mercer!” the head of security gasped, frantic noise and wailing sirens audible in the background. “It’s the Pinnacle! There’s an emergency on the mechanical floor!”
“What happened?” Adam barked, instantly standing up.
“Graham Voss escaped police transport while being moved to the federal holding facility two hours ago! He bypassed perimeter security using an old master maintenance keycard! He’s locked himself inside the primary electrical sub-station on thirty-eight, and he’s threatening to detonate the high-pressure gas lines!”
Abigail’s blood ran cold. “He’s going to bring the building down.”
Without hesitation, Adam and Abigail rushed out of the penthouse. Within twenty minutes, escorted by police cruisers with flashing emergency lights, they arrived at the base of the Mercer Pinnacle.
The street below was completely cordoned off. Dozens of fire engines, tactical police units, and SWAT teams surrounded the perimeter. Heavy snow was falling in blinding sheets, whipping around the towering glass structure.
“You cannot go up there, Mr. Mercer!” the police commander ordered, blocking the lobby doors. “The gas pressure is climbing. He has barricaded the stairwell doors from the inside.”
“He doesn't know the service bypass,” Abigail insisted, grabbing the commander’s arm. “Graham only knows the original blueprints. I designed the secondary ventilation ducts behind the utility elevator. We can reach the manual shutoff valve before the pressure reaches critical ignition!”
Adam looked at Abigail, seeing the absolute determination in her eyes. “We go together.”
Using the high-speed service elevator, they rode up through the silent tower until reaching the thirty-seventh floor, then climbed through the narrow, unmapped utility conduit to bypass the barricaded doors onto thirty-eight.
The mechanical floor was deafening. The smell of raw natural gas was thick and suffocating in the air. High-pressure warning sirens shrieked through the shadows.
Standing by the master fuel manifold, holding a flare gun and drenched in sweat, was Graham Voss. His prison clothes were filthy, his face twisted into an expression of deranged, venomous hatred.
“Keep back!” Graham screamed, raising the flare gun as Adam and Abigail emerged from the shadows. “Stay back, or I’ll incinerate every single floor of this monstrosity!”
“Graham, put the flare down!” Adam shouted, holding his hands up, coughing against the pungent gas fumes. “The building is evacuated! There’s no one here to hurt except yourself!”
“This was my masterpiece!” Graham howled, his voice breaking. “You took my name! You took my reputation! You gave everything to this... this beggar!”
“You never built this, Graham,” Abigail said calmly, stepping forward through the haze, her voice steady and fearless. “You built an illusion on stolen foundations. Look around you. The steel you tried to compromise is holding. The structure is sound. Even now, your hatred isn't strong enough to tear it down.”
Graham looked around at the reinforced carbon collars, gleaming under the emergency red strobe lights. His face crumpled in realization of his ultimate, absolute failure.
“If I can’t have it,” Graham sobbed, his finger tightening on the trigger of the flare gun, “no one will!”
Before Graham could fire, Adam charged forward through the fumes, tackling Graham into the heavy steel railing. The flare gun discharged harmlessly into the ceiling concrete, extinguishing against the non-flammable insulation.
Abigail sprinted past the struggling men to the gas manifold, grabbing the massive red emergency wheel. With every ounce of strength she possessed, she pulled the lever down, cutting the fuel feed to the boilers.
The roaring hiss of gas sputtered and died.

Seconds later, SWAT officers breached the utility doors, pinning the weeping, defeated Graham Voss to the concrete floor and dragging him away into the darkness for the final time.
Adam pulled Abigail into his arms, both of them gasping for clean air in the freezing winter draft blowing through the ventilation louvers. They were bruised, covered in soot, and freezing cold, but they were alive.
