Chapter 4 - Shadows On The Thirty-Eighth

The suspension of Graham Voss sent shockwaves through the construction site, but the crisis was far from over. Halting the project cost half a million dollars every single day, and the board gave Adam and Abigail precisely seven days to formulate a reinforcement plan—or the entire project would be liquidated, bankrupting Mercer Development.

Late that evening, Abigail and Adam walked through the cavernous, dimly lit expanse of the thirty-eighth floor. The city below was an ocean of glittering amber lights, but up here, exposed to the elements through temporary safety nets, the world felt raw and precarious.

“It’s worse than the ultrasound showed,” Abigail said, crouching near the primary load-bearing column with a high-powered inspection lamp. Her fingers traced a microscopic hairline fracture running diagonally along the steel flange. “The structural settling is accelerating. The weight of the upper thirty-two floors is crushing the support points.”

Adam crouched beside her, watching her work. In the harsh beam of the work light, her focus was mesmerizing. She possessed an instinctive understanding of physics and engineering that went far beyond textbooks.

“Can it be retrofitted without tearing down the top floors?” Adam asked, his shoulder brushing against hers.

“Yes,” she replied, looking up at him, her face only inches from his. “We need external post-tensioned steel collars and carbon-fiber reinforcement sleeves anchored directly into the bedrock core. It’s an aggressive surgery, but it will transfer the load away from these compromised beams.”

For a lingering moment, neither of them spoke. The bitter wind swept past them, but Adam felt an unfamiliar warmth radiating between them. He realized how much he had come to rely on her strength, her brilliant mind, and her quiet resilience. She was no longer just a strategic partner in a transactional contract; she was becoming the center of his world.

Suddenly, a sharp metallic click echoed from the shadows near the service elevator shaft.

Adam’s instincts flared. “Abigail, stay behind me.”

Out of the darkness emerged two men wearing reflective construction vests and hardhats, but neither carried tools. One of them held an iron crowbar; the other had his hand concealed inside a heavy canvas jacket.

“You folks shouldn't be wandering around an active hazard zone,” the larger man growled, his voice muffled by a dust mask. “Site’s closed.”

“I own this site,” Adam replied sharply, stepping forward to shield Abigail completely. “Identify yourselves. Who authorized you onto this deck?”

The men didn't answer with words. The larger man lunged forward, swinging the crowbar straight toward Adam’s head. Adam ducked beneath the heavy iron arc, driving his shoulder into the attacker’s midsection, tackling him onto the rough concrete floor.

The second man pulled a utility knife from his jacket and stepped toward Adam’s exposed back.

“Adam, watch out!” Abigail screamed.

Without a second thought for her own safety, Abigail grabbed a heavy steel surveyor’s tripod and rammed it into the second attacker’s chest, knocking him off balance. The knife clattered across the deck and slipped through the floor grate, plummeting hundreds of feet into the darkness below.

Sirens wailed in the distance as site security, alerted by the sudden elevator activity, finally burst onto the floor with flashlights. Seeing the incoming guards, the two intruders scrambled toward the emergency fire stairs, vanishing into the vertical labyrinth of the unfinished skyscraper.

Adam rose, his knuckles bruised, breathing heavily. He turned to Abigail, grabbing her by the shoulders. “Are you hurt? Did they touch you?”

“I’m fine,” she breathed, her heart pounding visibly against her chest. “I’m okay.”

Impulsively, Adam pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest. For a moment, she stiffened in surprise, unused to human touch that didn't bring pain or danger. Then, slowly, she buried her face in his jacket, letting the trembling subside as his steady heartbeat grounded her.

“Graham is desperate,” Abigail whispered into his shoulder. “He isn't just trying to protect his reputation anymore. He’s trying to hide criminal negligence.”

“He won't touch you again,” Adam vowed, his voice laced with iron. “I swear to you, Abigail. You’re safe with me.”
