Chapter 7 - Steel And Stone

The following four weeks were a whirlwind of relentless labor, intense engineering, and unprecedented teamwork. The scandal of Graham Voss’s arrest had cleared the way for Abigail to take complete command of the construction site.

Gone were the evening gowns and polished leather shoes. Abigail was in her element, clad in heavy denim, steel-toed work boots, a high-visibility vest, and a white hardhat. From sunrise until long past midnight, she directed crews of ironworkers, welders, and safety engineers across the thirty-eighth floor.

Adam was by her side every step of the way. Rather than sitting in his luxurious executive office, he established a mobile command center right on the construction deck, reviewing supply logistics, approving multimillion-dollar emergency material shipments, and personally serving coffee to the exhausted night-shift welders.

“Load transfer test commencing in ten seconds!” Abigail called out over the site radio one windy November evening. The wind off Lake Michigan whipped her hair across her face, but her eyes were fixed on the digital strain gauges mounted around the newly installed carbon-fiber collars and hydraulic post-tensioned steel sleeves.

Beside her, Adam held his breath. The entire future of the Mercer empire hung on this single moment. If the collars couldn't absorb the thirty-eight floors of overhead weight, the structural integrity would fail, forcing the city to condemn the entire tower.

“Engaging hydraulic pressure... now,” the lead technician announced.

A low, resonant groan echoed through the steel skeleton of the tower as hundreds of tons of pressure shifted onto the new reinforcement system. The floor beneath their boots vibrated slightly. Abigail knelt, watching the digital readouts on her monitor.

The red warning indicators flickered.

Then, one by one, they turned solid green.

“Shear stress dropped by sixty-eight percent,” the technician shouted in disbelief. “Tension tolerance normalized! The floor is holding! It’s completely stable!”

Cheers and applause erupted across the deck. Burly ironworkers threw their helmets into the air, hugging one another in celebration. The impossible engineering feat had succeeded.

In the midst of the roaring crowd, Abigail turned to Adam. Her face was smudged with soot and graphite, her eyes rimmed with exhaustion, but she was smiling—a brilliant, unburdened smile that made Adam’s heart stop.

Without thinking about contracts, board votes, or press appearances, Adam closed the distance between them, grabbed her by the waist, and pulled her into a passionate, breathless kiss.

The construction crew let out a deafening cheer, whistling and banging their wrenches against the steel girders.

When Adam finally pulled back, Abigail was flushed, her lips parted in breathless surprise, her hand resting over his heart.

“What was that for?” she whispered softly.

“For saving my building,” Adam said, his eyes searching hers with fierce tenderness. “And for reminding me who I am.”
