Chapter 8 - The Signature In The Hem

With trembling hands, Marianne knelt on the polished floor and unzipped the black nylon garment bag.

The ivory lace gown spilled out into the ballroom light, shimmering softly under the crystal chandeliers. Claire had already pinned the neckline down, intending to cut away the modesty panel to turn it into an ordinary party dress.

Lily walked forward slowly, dropping to her knees beside the beautiful fabric.

She gently ran her fingers over the embroidered forget-me-nots, feeling the exact tiny knots her mother had described in the old sketches.

"My mother told me once that she always signed her best work," Lily said quietly to the silent room.

"She said a true artist never lets anyone steal her soul without leaving an indelible mark."

Lily took a small pair of seamstress shears from her pocket, carefully lifting the inner silk lining of the hemline.

With two precise snips, she parted the interior fold of the train, exposing a strip of raw, woven linen hidden beneath the ivory thread.

Embroidered across the linen in fine, golden silk thread were three small lines:

Designed with love for Lily Harper.

By Evelyn Harper, Master Artisan.

December 24, 1999.

The room remained utterly silent as guests leaned forward to see the indisputable evidence sewn into the dress.

Eleanor Hale turned her face away in profound shame, remembering the contracts she had signed decades ago without looking at the human cost.

"Take your hands off that dress, Marianne," Grant commanded softly. "It belongs to the woman whose name is sewn into the fabric."

Marianne scrambled backward, weeping quietly as security officers escorted her out through the side exit to face the waiting detectives.

Claire Whitmore turned and fled the ballroom in tears, her mother following behind in utter social ruin.

Grant knelt beside Lily on the floor, gently taking her hand and helping her stand up in the center of the grand room.

"Your mother’s name will be on the boutique door tomorrow morning," Grant said, his voice soft enough that only she could hear. "And no one will ever hide her light again."
