Chapter 6 - The Society Gala

By seven that evening, the grand ballroom of the Cleveland Grand Hotel was glowing with crystal chandeliers and floral arrangements.
The city’s high society gathered in black-tie attire to celebrate the impending alliance between the Hale and Whitmore dynasties. Eleanor Hale stood near the orchestra, sipping vintage champagne while receiving congratulations from city council members and bank presidents.
Claire Whitmore stood beside her mother, radiant with smug satisfaction as local society photographers took flashing pictures.
"Where is Grant?" Eleanor asked through clenched teeth, leaning toward Claire’s ear. "His driver reported he left the downtown office hours ago."
"He’ll be here," Claire scoffed, adjusting an emerald bracelet. "Men like Grant always show up where duty demands it. Besides, Marianne is delivering the gown directly to the presidential suite upstairs for the formal portrait at eight."
The grand double doors of the ballroom suddenly swung open with a resounding thud.
The murmur of conversation died down instantly as Grant Hale walked through the entrance into the dazzling light. He wasn't wearing his faded gray coat; he wore an impeccably tailored black tuxedo, his eyes blazing with absolute authority.
Beside him walked Lily Harper, her dark hair swept back in an elegant, effortless updo.
She wore a simple, beautifully tailored dark navy silk dress borrowed from Arthur Bell’s vintage archive, standing tall and poised beside the city’s most powerful bachelor.
A collective gasp rippled through the room as society guests turned to stare at the unknown woman holding Grant Hale’s arm.

Eleanor stepped forward immediately, her glass of champagne shaking slightly in her hand. "Grant, what is the meaning of this spectacle? Who is this girl?"
"This is Lily Harper," Grant announced, his voice carrying clearly across the quieted ballroom. "The rightful owner of every design currently hanging in Vale Bridal, and the daughter of Evelyn Harper."
