Chapter 5 - A Father’s Awakening

The following morning broke gray and cold over Minneapolis, with the first light dusting of winter snow dusting the rooftops. Garrett sat parked two blocks away from Hannah’s apartment building inside an unassuming SUV he had rented to avoid drawing attention. In the backseat sat two large cardboard boxes filled with high-grade telescope kits, solar system models, and dozens of children’s books on space exploration. Yet he made no move to deliver them. He knew that material wealth was an insult to Hannah; what she needed was stability, respect, and a father who proved himself through actions rather than bank balances.

At 7:30 AM, the lobby door of the apartment building opened. Hannah emerged, bundled in an old woolen coat, holding the hands of Liam and Owen. The two boys were bundled in oversized winter parkas with knitted hats pulled low over their ears. Liam was chattering excitedly, pointing his small mitten toward the gray sky, while Owen walked quietly beside his mother, clutching his beloved drawing notebook tightly against his chest.

Garrett watched with an ache in his chest that felt almost unbearable. Every movement they made mirrored his own boyhood memories—the way Liam tilted his head when he laughed, the intense, thoughtful furrow in Owen’s brow that resembled Garrett’s own childhood photographs. For four years, these tiny souls had navigated the world without him. He had missed their first steps, their first words, the nights they cried from teething, and the triumphs of their earliest milestones.

As they approached the corner bus stop, a reckless delivery van sped around the icy bend, spraying a wall of freezing slush directly toward the sidewalk. In an instant, Garrett leapt from his vehicle. Without thinking, he sprinted across the street and threw himself between the spray and the family, using his heavy winter coat as a shield to block the freezing wave from soaking Hannah and the boys.

The icy water drenched Garrett’s back and legs, but the children remained completely dry. He stood panting in the freezing air, snow clinging to his hair, looking down into the wide, startled eyes of his twin sons.

""Mister, your coat got all messy!"" Liam exclaimed, his blue eyes sparkling with innocent curiosity as he looked up at the tall stranger.

Owen stepped slightly behind his mother’s coat, peeking out with cautious wonder. He looked at Garrett’s face, then glanced down at the drawing clutched in his hand—a crayon illustration of a smiling man in a silver astronaut suit. ""Are you the man from the stars?"" the quiet boy asked in a soft whisper.

Tears welled up in Garrett’s eyes, burning against the cold morning air. He dropped to his knees on the snow-dusted sidewalk, completely unconcerned about the slush ruining his trousers, bringing himself down to eye level with the two boys.

""I’m not from the stars, little guy,"" Garrett whispered, his voice trembling with profound emotion. ""I’m just... a builder who got lost in a very long storm. But I’ve been looking for you two for a very long time.""

Hannah stood frozen, her hands resting protectively on the boys' shoulders. She saw the raw, unguarded agony in Garrett’s face—a vulnerability she had never witnessed during their five years of high-society marriage. The billionaire, the cold titan of industry, was kneeling in the dirt, weeping openly before two children who had no concept of his wealth.

""Garrett..."" Hannah began, her voice softening despite her best efforts to remain distant. ""You shouldn't be here.""

""I know,"" Garrett said, rising slowly to his feet, keeping his eyes on her. ""I don't expect you to forgive me, Hannah. I don't expect you to let me into their lives today, or tomorrow, or even next year. But Vanguard is gone. The medical debt is erased completely—not with a gift, but because the predatory firm was shut down for illegal operations. You will never receive another threatening letter or phone call as long as you live.""

Hannah’s breath caught in her throat. ""What did you do, Garrett?""

May you like

""I did what I should have done five years ago,"" he replied gently. ""I chose my family over the empire. I resigned from the board this morning. I’m stepping away from Lawson Enterprises. I don't want to build towers anymore, Hannah. I just want the chance to learn how to be a father, if you will ever permit me to try.""

The school bus pulled up to the curb with a hiss of pneumatic brakes, interrupting the heavy silence between them. Hannah looked down at Liam and Owen, who were looking back and forth between their mother and the tall man who had shielded them from the cold. For the first time in five years, the wall of ice around Hannah’s heart showed a faint, undeniable hairline fracture.
