Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

Sleep did not come to Garrett Lawson that night. He spent the dark hours pacing the hardwood perimeter of his empty penthouse, staring down at the twinkling Minneapolis skyline below. The sprawling metropolis looked like a circuit board of cold, indifferent light—monuments of glass and steel that he had spent the last decade conquering. Yet none of those monuments could shield him from the echo of Hannah’s voice. Not a single cent of your blood money paid for their oxygen.

By dawn, he summoned his long-time legal advisor and personal confidante, Marcus Vance, to his office. Marcus, a veteran corporate attorney who had navigated Lawson Enterprises through hostile takeovers and municipal politics, arrived with a thick leather dossier under his arm.

""You look like hell, Garrett,"" Marcus remarked, taking a seat across the mahogany desk and pulling off his wire-rimmed glasses. ""Your mother has already called my office twice this morning. The Henderson Group wants to finalize the harborfront contract by Thursday. That's a two-hundred-million-dollar deal. You can't afford to be distracted.""

""Cancel the meeting,"" Garrett commanded bluntly, not looking up from a faded photograph of Hannah he had dug out of a forgotten lockbox in his desk. It was taken seven years ago at a secluded cabin in Duluth, long before the board meetings and charity galas swallowed their marriage whole. She was laughing, her face bare and radiant in the autumn sun.

Marcus paused, his brow furrowing deeply. ""Cancel the Henderson meeting? Garrett, your mother spent six months courting Victoria Henderson to secure those harbor rights. Victoria is ready to announce the partnership at the winter gala. If you pull out now, the board will call for a vote of no confidence.""

""Let them call it,"" Garrett snapped, turning to face Marcus with bloodshot eyes. ""Five years ago, when Hannah left... who managed the legal separation paperwork?""

Marcus looked visibly uncomfortable, shifting in his leather chair. ""Your mother retained an outside firm to expedite the proceedings. You were in London handling the transit terminal acquisition. You told us to ensure she received a generous settlement and let your mother oversee the operational details so you wouldn't be burdened.""

""She didn't take a dime, Marcus,"" Garrett said, his voice dropping to a dangerous hush. ""I saw her financial records yesterday. She has over one hundred thousand dollars in medical debt. She teaches middle school science and rides two city buses every morning. What happened to the settlement trust I authorized?""

Marcus swallowed hard, opening his briefcase with reluctant fingers. ""Garrett... you have to understand the family dynamics at that time. Your mother, Eleanor, was adamant that Hannah was a liability to your public image. Eleanor believed Hannah's working-class background and refusal to attend corporate fundraising circuits would sabotage the company's public offering. When Hannah discovered she was pregnant, she didn't hide it from the family. She went directly to your family estate.""

The air left Garrett’s lungs in a suffocating rush. ""She told my mother?""

""She did,"" Marcus answered grimly, sliding a yellowed non-disclosure agreement across the polished wood. ""Eleanor told her that an unannounced pregnancy during the corporate restructuring would ruin the company's valuation. She presented Hannah with a choice: surrender any future parental claims to the Lawson trust and sign away all rights to the Lawson name, or Eleanor’s legal team would launch a public smear campaign questioning the paternity of the children and strip her family’s legacy farm in Wisconsin through predatory foreclosures. Hannah tore up the settlement check, walked out, and swore she would raise those children without a single Lawson dollar.""

Garrett gripped the edge of his desk until his knuckles turned white. A violent fury surged through his veins, hotter and more destructive than anything he had ever experienced in business. His mother, the grand matriarch of high society, had weaponized his empire to exile his own flesh and blood into poverty, all while leading him to believe Hannah had simply grown tired of their high-profile lifestyle and walked away.

""You knew this,"" Garrett growled, glaring at his oldest advisor. ""You sat in this room for four years and watched me build an empire on top of an empty grave.""

May you like

""I was paid to protect the corporation, Garrett,"" Marcus said quietly, genuine remorse flickering in his eyes. ""Eleanor held the controlling shares until your thirty-fifth birthday. But now you control the majority. If you dig up this past, you will not just start a family feud. You will trigger an all-out war with the board, the press, and the Henderson family.""

Garrett picked up his coat, ignoring the warning completely. ""Tell Victoria Henderson the deal is on hold. If my mother calls, tell her I’ve gone to South Side Minneapolis. And tell her that the Lawson legacy she tried to protect is about to face the truth.""
