Chapter 3 - The Cold Encounter

The bell above Lombardi’s Bakery chimed as the brass handle turned, letting in a gust of November wind that carried the crisp scent of autumn leaves and impending frost. Old Mr. Lombardi was wiping flour from the stainless-steel counter when he looked up, squinting through thick spectacles at the imposing man standing in his doorway. Garrett Lawson wore a simple woolen sweater and dark jeans, but his commanding posture and sharp jawline immediately gave him away.
""We don't get billionaires on this street corner very often, Mr. Lawson,"" Lombardi said cautiously, setting down his rag. ""Unless you're planning to buy out the entire block and tear down my family's shop for another condominium.""
""I'm not here on business, Mr. Lombardi,"" Garrett replied softly, walking toward the display case. His gaze landed on the freshly baked cinnamon rolls, their sugary glaze gleaming under the bakery lights. ""I'm here because of Hannah. And the boys.""
Lombardi’s expression instantly darkened, protective warmth turning into sharp wariness. ""Hannah is the finest woman in this neighborhood. She works twelve hours a day between grading papers and cleaning classrooms to keep those boys fed and warm. If you’ve come around here to cause her trouble, I don't care how many security guards you have waiting outside—you can march right back to your glass tower.""
""I don't want to cause her trouble,"" Garrett said, his voice laced with an exhaustion that caught the old baker off guard. ""I just... I want to understand. Does she ever talk about their father?""
Lombardi sighed, shaking his head as he leaned over the counter. ""Never spoke his name once. All she told the boys was that their father had important work building things far away, but that he was lost in a storm he couldn't find his way out of. Little Owen believes his dad is an astronaut lost in outer space. That's why the boy draws planets all day long. He thinks if he draws a clear enough map of the stars, his father will finally find his way home.""
The words felt like a physical blow to Garrett’s chest. He turned his face away, fighting the stinging heat behind his eyelids. While he had been dining with foreign dignitaries and sipping vintage scotch in private suites, his four-year-old son was sitting on worn linoleum, drawing maps to guide him out of the dark.
""Pack four dozen of your freshest rolls and pastries, Mr. Lombardi,"" Garrett murmured, pulling out a thick roll of bills and setting it on the counter. ""Deliver them to the South Side Elementary staff room every Monday morning for the rest of the school year. Tell them it's from a local business supporter. Don't use my name.""
Lombardi looked at the money, then up at Garrett’s hollow eyes. ""Money won't fix what pride broke, son. But kindness to a good school is never wasted. I'll make the deliveries.""
Leaving the bakery, Garrett drove directly to South Side Middle School. The red-brick building looked worn against the overcast sky, with chain-link fences surrounding a small asphalt playground where children were running through afternoon recess. Garrett parked his black sedan across the street and stood by the iron gate, pulling his coat tight against the biting wind.
Near the jungle gym, Hannah was supervising a group of sixth graders. Despite the brisk cold, she laughed as a girl showed off a volcanic science model made of clay and papier-mâché. Her laughter carried across the yard, genuine and untainted by the artificial pretenses of the corporate world Garrett inhabited.
Suddenly, a loud commotion broke out near the staff parking lot. Two aggressive men in dark suits, flanked by a local process server, were arguing heatedly with the school principal. Garrett recognized the insignia on their lapels immediately—they belonged to Vanguard Asset Management, a predatory debt collection firm notorious for aggressively targeting medical debtors.
""We have a court-ordered garnishment against Hannah Prescott’s wages,"" one of the collectors shouted, waving a clipboard in front of the distraught principal. ""If she doesn't settle the overdue NICU hospital arrears by the end of the business day, we are serving a lien on her vehicle and initiating legal seizure proceedings right here on municipal property.""
Hannah heard the shouting and walked briskly over, her face paling as she recognized the firm's logo. ""Please, not here,"" she pleaded in a frantic whisper, conscious of the students watching from the playground. ""I told your office I sent the seventy-five-dollar monthly installment yesterday! That was every spare dollar I had after paying our heating bill!""
""Seventy-five dollars won't even cover the interest on one hundred and twenty thousand, Ms. Prescott,"" the collector sneered loudly, relishing the public humiliation. ""You owe the hospital network, and our client wants their capital.""
Before the collector could shove the legal papers into Hannah’s trembling hands, a heavy, iron grip locked onto his wrist. Garrett stepped between them, his towering frame completely eclipsing the collector. His eyes burned with an icy, lethal intensity that instantly sucked the air from the courtyard.
""Drop the summons,"" Garrett ordered, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with absolute authority.
May you like
""Who the hell are you?"" the collector barked, trying to wrench his arm free, only to find Garrett’s grip tightening like a steel vice.
""I am Garrett Lawson,"" he said clearly, loud enough for the entire courtyard to hear. ""And if you utter another syllable to this woman, I will buy your entire collection agency before the market closes at four o'clock today, fire your entire division, and ensure neither of you ever works in corporate finance again. Now get off this property before I have my private security escort you off the pavement.""
