Chapter 9 - The Cleansing

By dawn, the rain over Chicago had finally stopped, replaced by a pale, golden sunrise breaking over the tranquil waters of Lake Michigan. The headlines of the morning papers and local news channels were already in a frenzy: a massive gangland war had erupted overnight in Lake Forest, completely annihilating the Gallagher syndicate. Federal agents, guided by an anonymous tip containing detailed offshore accounts and manifests, had seized forty million dollars in illegal contraband at the docks.
Liam Gallagher was in federal custody under armed guard at a secure prison hospital, severely burned, disgraced, and facing multiple consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
In the Russo penthouse, absolute silence reigned.
Victor stepped out of the private elevator, thoroughly showered and dressed in a fresh, soft cashmere sweater and dark slacks. The scent of gunpowder and rain was gone, replaced by the faint, comforting aroma of fresh coffee brewing in the kitchen.
In the living room, Claire was fast asleep on the massive sectional sofa, completely peaceful, wrapped in a warm blanket with a mug of chamomile tea on the side table.
Victor walked softly down the hallway and pushed open the master bedroom door.
Audrey was awake, sitting by the bay window, watching the golden light reflect off the lake. Her wrapped hand rested gently in her lap. When she heard him enter, she turned around.
There was no fear in her eyes. No terror. No hesitation.
Victor walked over and stopped two feet away from her chair. He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket and set it gently on the small glass table beside her. Inside rested the emerald-cut diamond ring, sparkling radiantly in the morning sun.
“The city is clean, Audrey,” Victor said, his voice raw with exhaustion and emotion. “Claire is safe in the next room. The Gallaghers are gone forever. Tommy will never hurt anyone again.”
He paused, looking down at the ring, then back at her face.
“I promised I would never let my world bleed into yours. I brought a monster into your life, and because of me, you suffered. If you still want to walk away... if you take off the coat, pack your bags, and want to live a quiet life far away from me, I will give you everything I own and let you go. I love you too much to ever force you to be afraid.”

Audrey stared at him for a long moment, the silence stretching between them like a fragile glass thread.
Then, slowly, a soft, tearful smile touched her lips.
