Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

By 4:00 AM, the penthouse was secure. Claire sat on the edge of Audrey’s bed, both sisters wrapped in a heavy fleece blanket, weeping and clinging to each other as if the rest of the world had vanished. Dr. Sterling had examined Claire, confirming that aside from dehydration, severe bruising, and emotional shock, she was physically unharmed.

Victor stood outside the bedroom door, watching them through the small opening. Seeing Audrey smile through her tears, her good hand stroking Claire’s hair, filled him with an overwhelming sense of purpose. The diamond engagement ring lay back on his study desk, glowing softly under the green desk lamp. She hadn’t put it back on yet, and he wouldn’t ask her to—not until the shadow of the Gallagher name was erased permanently from Chicago.

Marco approached quietly, his face grim. “Boss, Liam Gallagher knows. The docks didn't report in, and Declan’s phone is dead. Liam has pulled back all his lieutenants into his private estate in Lake Forest. He’s turned the mansion into a fortress. Over thirty hired guns, automatic rifles, security cameras on every tree line.”

Victor turned around, his eyes cold as black glass. “He thinks a gated mansion will save him from an open contract. What about the city police?”

“Captain Miller owes you three favors,” Marco said with a wicked grin. “He’s declared a temporary radio blackout in that sector for the next two hours due to a simulated tactical exercise. Nobody is coming to help Liam Gallagher tonight.”

Victor walked back into his study and opened the heavy steel vault embedded behind his bookcase. Inside hung racks of military-grade hardware—remnants of the brutal cartel wars he had fought and won a decade ago. He picked up an assault rifle, checking the chamber with practiced muscle memory.

Before he could load the magazine, light footsteps sounded behind him.

Audrey stood in the doorway of the study. She had changed into a soft gray sweater, her left arm resting in a supportive sling. Her face was still terribly pale, but the paralyzing dread that had broken her hours ago had been replaced by a fierce, quiet resolve.

“You’re going to end this,” she said. It wasn't a question.

Victor turned to face her, lowering his weapon. “Audrey, I told you when I first asked you out that I would never bring this violence into your life. I failed you. I let a viper into our home, and he hurt you.”

She walked toward him slowly, stopping right in front of his chest. With her uninjured right hand, she reached out and touched his cheek, her warm fingertips tracing his jawline.

“You didn't fail me, Victor,” she whispered, her voice steady and clear. “You came for my sister. You saved my life. But if you walk out that door, promise me one thing.”

Victor looked deep into her eyes. “Anything.”

“Come back to me alive. Because four days from now, I still intend to marry you beside that lake.”

Victor felt his breath catch. He leaned down, pressing his lips passionately against hers, sealing a promise soaked in blood and devotion.
