Chapter 6 - The Sheriff’s Palace

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office was housed in a historic red-brick building that radiated old-world authority and small-town pride. Inside his expansive corner office, lined with polished oak and hunting trophies, Sheriff Douglas Caldwell poured himself two fingers of twenty-year-old bourbon. He was a broad-shouldered, silver-tongued politician who had ruled the county unchallenged for over two decades. In his mind, the state line was where the law ended, and his personal fiefdom began.

His desk phone buzzed sharply. Caldwell reached over lazily, picking up the receiver. "Talk to me."

"Sheriff, Vance and Miller aren't responding to radio dispatch," his secretary said, her voice laced with nervous tension. "State police dispatch says their transponders stopped tracking twenty minutes ago near the county border."

Caldwell frowned, setting down his glass. "Did they bag another high-value runner? Tell them to use their personal burner phones. I told those idiots never to stay off the radio grid for more than ten minutes."

"I tried their personal cells, Sheriff. Both go straight to voicemail."

Before Caldwell could process the warning, the heavy double glass doors of the front lobby shattered inward. The loud, synchronized thud of tactical boots echoed off the marble floors, accompanied by the urgent shout of orders: "Federal agents! Warrant! Step away from your desks! Hands up!"

Caldwell shot out of his leather chair, his hand instantly reaching for the customized Colt .45 sitting in his desk drawer. But before his fingers could touch the grip, the door to his private office blew off its hinges with a deafening crack.

Three SWAT operators flooded the room, carbines aimed at Caldwell's chest. Walking directly behind them, her bruised temple visible beneath her pulled-back hair, was Victoria Cross. She held a red-sealed document in her left hand and her gold FBI credentials in her right.

"Sheriff Caldwell," Victoria declared, her voice ringing clear over the ringing in his ears. "Step back from that desk, place your palms flat against the window behind you, and do not make a single sudden movement. You are under arrest for racketeering, federal civil rights violations, and conspiracy to commit extortion."

Caldwell stared in disbelief at the young woman standing in front of him. For the first time in thirty years, the color drained completely from his face, leaving behind the pale, trembling outline of a man who realized his empire had just collapsed.
