Chapter 2 - The Red Light Blinks

Victoria stepped away from the car door, rolling her shoulders to release the tension. She didn't shout. She didn't curse. The quiet intensity radiating from her was far more terrifying to Miller and Vance than any screaming tirade could ever be. While Vance was busy picking his dropped keys out of the dirt, Victoria reached through the open window of her car, picked up the phone that Miller had violently slapped down, and tapped the screen once.

A bright red recording icon appeared, followed by a timer that read forty-seven minutes and twelve seconds.

"You thought I was trying to turn my camera on when you grabbed my arm," Victoria murmured, holding the screen up to Miller’s face. "The camera was running the moment your cruiser appeared in my rearview mirror. It’s been streaming directly to a secure cloud server at the regional field office in Chicago. Every word, every insult, every illegal order, and the sound of my head hitting this metal door frame has already been logged into an active federal case file."

Miller felt his knees turn to water. His mind raced back through every filthy shortcut he and Vance had taken over the past three years. The cash bribes taken from out-of-town drivers, the confiscated narcotics that never made it into the evidence locker, the falsified speed-trap logs designed to pad their monthly municipal bonuses. They had operated with total impunity in this sleepy rural county because Sheriff Douglas Caldwell had their backs, sweeping citizen complaints into the shredder before anyone could ask questions.

"Agent Cross, please," Vance pleaded, his chest heaving as panic seized his lungs. "We made a bad call. It’s been a ninety-degree day, twelve hours on shift, tensions are high. We can tear up the stop. We didn't even file the paper yet. You can just get in your car and go. We’ll escort you all the way to the county line, no hard feelings."

"No hard feelings?" Victoria echoed, a faint, humorless smile touching her lips. "Officer Vance, you didn't just violate highway procedure. You committed a felony deprivation of rights under color of law. In about twenty minutes, tactical units will arrive at this mile marker to secure this vehicle and review my preliminary field report. If you think this ends with a polite apology and an escort, you have completely misunderstood who is holding the leverage here."

Miller’s survival instincts suddenly kicked into overdrive, but in the worst possible way. He exchanged a desperate, frantic look with Vance. In the desolate stretch of pine forest flanking Route 9, there were no civilian witnesses, no passing cars, and only one federal agent standing between them and a twenty-year sentence in federal prison.

Victoria saw the shift in their eyes immediately. She knew the exact moment an arrogant bully transitioned into a cornered animal, and she subtly shifted her weight, preparing for whatever desperate move they might attempt next.
