Chapter 6 - The Fall from Grace

Derek could not breathe.

The air in the boardroom felt suddenly thin, as if the vacuum of space had ruptured the windows. His heart hammered violently against his ribs, sending a deafening rush of blood into his ears. He gripped the edge of the conference table so hard his knuckles turned dead white.

Natalie?

No. It was impossible.

This was the woman who, less than seventy-two hours ago, was wearing a faded bakery apron and washing greasy dishes in a kitchen that smelled of boiled potatoes. This was the woman whose bank account he had emptied to buy his Atlanta hotel rooms.

Derek involuntarily stood up, his chair scraping loudly across the polished hardwood floor. “Natalie... what kind of sick joke is this?”

The entire boardroom fell dead silent. Senior vice presidents and directors turned their heads in shock, staring at Derek as if he had lost his mind.

Arthur Vance did not raise his voice. He merely signaled to the two private security officers stationed at the door. “Mr. Cross. Address the Chairwoman with appropriate professional decorum or you will be escorted out immediately.”

Derek ignored Vance entirely. His face turned a mottled shade of red and white. He pointed a trembling finger at Natalie. “This is ridiculous! She isn't an heiress! Her name is Natalie Miller! She works at a grocery store! She’s my wife!”

A heavy murmur broke out among the executives.

Natalie did not blink. Her green eyes remained fixed on Derek with an icy detachment that was more terrifying than any scream could ever be. She calmly turned a page in the folder in front of her.

“Your soon-to-be ex-wife, Mr. Cross,” Natalie said smoothly, her voice carrying through the silent room like a blade sliding from a scabbard. “Though legally, that matter is already being resolved. Mr. Vance, would you please distribute the morning’s internal audit results?”

Vance nodded. Assistants moved along the table, placing a thick audit report in front of every senior director. A copy was dropped directly before Derek.

“Over the weekend,” Natalie explained to the board, “a forensic audit of Vanguard Commercial’s regional accounts revealed unauthorized expense disbursements, fraudulent client entertaining claims, and systematic account manipulation within the mid-tier brokerage team.”

Derek’s stomach plummeted into an abyss.

“Specifically,” Natalie continued, looking Derek straight in the eye, “Mr. Cross has routinely submitted personal weekend travel, designer clothing receipts, and private vehicle leases under the guise of ‘prospective client acquisitions.’ Worse still, our internal security confirmed that Mr. Cross shared proprietary portfolio bid numbers with Gregory Pike of Pike Commercial Holdings during a private trip to Atlanta this past Saturday.”

The board members gasped. Industrial espionage and breach of fiduciary duty were career-ending offenses.

“That’s a lie!” Derek shouted, panic cracking his voice. “Lauren Pike and I were discussing a joint partnership! Her father was going to bring millions into this firm!”

“Mr. Pike was using your desperate vanity to undercut Vanguard’s bids on three prime commercial lots in uptown Charlotte,” Natalie countered with razor-sharp precision. “At seven o’clock this morning, Prescott Capital acquired Pike Commercial Holdings' outstanding debt notes. Mr. Gregory Pike has been forced into immediate debt restructuring and has surrendered those three lots to Vanguard without contest.”

She paused, closing her folder with a quiet, decisive thud.

“Mr. Pike also formally terminated your informal liaison with his firm thirty minutes ago. It appears he has no interest in associating with an employee who faces immediate federal fraud and insider trading charges.”

“No...” Derek gasped, backing away from his chair. “Natalie, please... we need to talk in private. You can’t do this to me! We’re married!”

“Mr. Derek Cross,” Natalie said, her voice dropping into a tone of absolute, irrevocable finality. “Your employment with Vanguard Commercial is terminated effective immediately for cause. Your company vehicle has been repossessed in the parking garage. Your professional broker license is suspended pending a formal ethics review by the state board. And my personal legal team has already filed criminal charges for grand larceny regarding the six thousand dollars you unlawfully seized from our joint account on Friday morning.”

Two broad-shouldered security guards stepped up on either side of Derek, gripping his arms with iron holds.

“Get your hands off me!” Derek yelled hysterically, struggling as he was dragged backward toward the exit. “Natalie! Listen to me! Lauren meant nothing to me! It was just business! Natalie!”

May you like

The double oak doors slammed shut behind him, cutting off his desperate cries.

Natalie turned her gaze back to the silent, awe-struck board members. “Now, gentlemen. Let us discuss Vanguard’s fourth-quarter expansion.”
