Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Trap

Victoria’s face transformed from composed elegance to sheer, naked horror. She opened her mouth to speak, but only a choked gasp escaped her throat. She realized instantly that the seven-year game of manipulation had collapsed in a single morning.

“You have no proof of anything,” she hissed, dropping all pretense of affection. Her eyes flashed with venomous hatred. “Even if you can stumble across a room, you're still a broken man, Julian! The board of directors arrives in two hours. Richard and I hold the proxy votes of forty percent of the institutional investors. By noon, you will be stripped of your executive powers. We will have you declared medically incompetent, and that little street rat you brought home will be handed over to state protective custody before the sun sets!”

With a furious spin on her heels, Victoria stormed out of the study, slamming the heavy mahogany doors behind her.

Julian stood in the center of the room, taking a deep, steadying breath. His legs throbbed with a dull ache, but the fire inside his chest burned away every trace of fatigue. He walked over to the sofa where Sofie had just stirred awake, rubbing her eyes with her small fists.

“Daddy?” she murmured, blinking sleepily.

Julian knelt down, gently brushing a stray braid away from her forehead. “Good morning, my sweet girl. Are you hungry?”

“Mommy said when you walked, we had to go find the blue box,” Sofie said matter-of-factly, sitting up and looking directly into his eyes.

Julian paused, his heart skipping a beat. “The blue box? What blue box, Sofie?”

“Mommy kept a blue metal box hidden under my bed in our old cabin,” Sofie explained, her innocent voice ringing with total honesty. “She told me, ‘Sofie, if Daddy walks, tell him the key is inside my wedding ring, and the box has the names of the bad men who tried to break our family.’”

Julian’s breath caught. His wedding ring. When the rescuers had recovered Clara’s supposed remains seven years ago, they had handed Julian her platinum wedding band, which he had worn on a silver chain around his neck every day since. He pulled the chain out from beneath his shirt, staring at the band. With trembling fingers, he examined the thick platinum ring. Near the inner inscription, he noticed a microscopic seam he had never detected before. Using the tip of a letter opener from his desk, Julian pressed firmly against the tiny notch.

A hidden hollow compartment clicked open. Inside was a miniature micro-SD card and a tiny brass key.

“Marcus!” Julian called out instantly. “Cancel the trip to the upstate lab. Get your cyber team up here right now. Clara didn't just survive the crash—she spent seven years compiling an ironclad federal dossier.”
