Chapter 8 - A Father’s Final Command

Arthur stepped over to the courtroom media console, plugged in the flash drive, and hit play.
The large high-definition monitor mounted on the courtroom wall flickered to life. The image of a man appeared. Richard Vance sat in a leather armchair in Arthur’s office. Though his cheeks were sunken and his skin bore the pale, yellowish tint of terminal illness, his posture was upright, and his eyes burned with an intense, protective fire.
""My name is Richard Vance,"" the voice resonated through the courtroom speakers, deep, gravelly, but utterly resolute. ""I am recording this on September 15th, in the presence of my attorney, Arthur Pendelton. I am of sound mind, even if my body is failing me.""
Evelyn stared at the screen, her mouth slightly open, trembling as if she were seeing a ghost rise from the grave.
""If this recording is being played in a court of law,"" Richard continued, looking directly into the camera lens, ""it means that my fears have materialized. It means that my wife, Evelyn, has attempted to subvert the trust I built for my two beautiful children, Lily and Owen.""
A collective hush fell over the room. Even Sterling looked down at his legal pad, unable to meet the screen.
""Evelyn,"" Richard’s recorded voice grew stern, addressing her directly across time and mortality. ""I knew why you married me. I hoped that in time, you would grow to love my children as I did. But over the last six months, as my disease took hold, I watched how you looked at them. You looked at them as financial obstacles. You looked at them as burdens.""
Tears of rage and terror welled in Evelyn’s eyes, her pristine veneer completely shattering.
""I hereby affirm under oath that I have never, and would never, revoke the Vance Family Trust dated March 14th,"" Richard declared firmly. ""Eighty percent of my entire net worth—including all real estate, liquid investments, and corporate shares—is locked into that trust solely for the care, education, and lifelong support of Lily and Owen Vance. To Evelyn, I leave the prenuptial settlement of two million dollars and not a penny more. And if Evelyn abandons, mistreats, or neglects my children in any way, that prenuptial settlement is forfeited in its entirety.""
Richard took a slow, labored breath, leaning closer to the lens. His voice softened, cracking with raw paternal emotion.
""Lily. Owen. If you ever hear this... Daddy loves you with all his heart. You were my greatest joy. Be brave. Look after each other. And to whoever is standing beside my children right now, fighting for them when they cannot fight for themselves... as their father, I give you my eternal gratitude. Protect my babies.""
The screen went black.
Silence hung heavy in Courtroom 402, broken only by the muffled sobs of a court reporter who had quietly pulled a tissue from her pocket.
Judge Caldwell removed her glasses, wiped a tear from her own eye, and looked down from the bench with cold, righteous fury. Her gaze locked directly onto Evelyn Vance.
""Mrs. Vance,"" Judge Caldwell's voice was a whip crack. ""In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed conduct as despicable, predatory, and morally bankrupt as yours. You didn't just abandon two helpless five-year-old children in an airport terminal; you attempted to rob them of their father's legacy through calculated, felonious fraud.""
""Your Honor, please—"" Sterling stammered, his defense completely eviscerated.
""Silence, counsel!"" Judge Caldwell roared. ""I am immediately referring this matter to the Cook County State's Attorney and the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois for immediate indictment on charges of forgery, perjury, grand larceny, and felony child abandonment! Bail is revoked! Mrs. Vance will be remanded into custody immediately!""
Two armed sheriff's deputies stepped forward, took Evelyn by the arms, and pulled her from her chair.
""No! You can't do this to me!"" Evelyn shrieked, kicking and flailing as the deputies clicked the handcuffs onto her wrists for the second time in four days. ""That money is mine! It belongs to me!""
""Get her out of my sight,"" Judge Caldwell ordered coldly.
The heavy doors banged shut behind Evelyn as she was dragged down the hall, her screams fading into the distant marble stairwell.

Judge Caldwell took a deep breath, composed herself, and looked down at our table. Her expression transformed from furious justice to warm, administrative grace.
""Now, concerning the matter of Lily and Owen Vance."""
